June 1, 2012 — The Carter County Citizens for a Better Way will host a jail information rally on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Grayson City Park.
The bipartisan watchdog group was created in response to the proposed regional jail alliance. The ordinances, which would create an alliance between the Boyd and Carter county jails, would put an appointed board in charge of the two facilities.
After the ordinances were presented during the May 15 meeting of Fiscal Courts in both counties, the first reading was thrown out due to questions of possible open meetings violations in Carter County. Boyd County tabled the second reading on May 23.
In spite of widespread public opposition in Carter County, the ordinances were read again on May 29. In the face of an openly hostile crowd that opposed the regional jail authority, the first reading passed in a 3-2 vote.
US Marshal Tim Goode confirmed on Wednesday that if the ordinances pass the final reading, the federal prisoner contract with the Carter County Detention Center would be void.
The second and final reading of the ordinances is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5 at 10 a.m.
