April 23, 2008 — Editor,
I would like to respond to the Iraq weather report printed in last week’s letter to the editor. It is obvious that the want-to-be meteorologist has never been to Iraq, nor does he have anyone close to him that has served in Iraq. If he had he would not be spreading propaganda as carelessly as he does. I served in Iraq for seven months doing convoys for over 10,000 miles and in that time I seen 4-road side bombs. I suggest to people who want to voice their opinions to take the time to research the facts. Lets look at some facts. Since the start of the Iraq War, there have been 4,039 American deaths. In the same time period as the Iraq war there have been 4,654 deaths on Kentucky highways and 762 murders in Kentucky. That is 1,377 more deaths in Kentucky then in “War Torn” Iraq. So the logical conclusion is that it is safer in Iraq than in Kentucky. The meaning behind “they did not die in vain” is that they died for a higher cause than themselves. Maybe you can answer a question for me. What does “ We support the troops but not the war,” mean? In the world I grew up in the troops is the war. Maybe it means you want the troops to come home alive but to not do a good job there. If you read nothing else in this article please read the next couple lines. We have local people that are being deployed and although everyone is entitled to their opinion please remember that the person behind you that could over hear your conversation might have family members deployed.

The WCHS class of 1978 is finalizing plans for our 30th year class reunion, and letters and emails are being sent out to classmates with many details. There are still some classmates that we have been unable to obtain postal addresses or email addresses for. If any classmates or family members could tell us how to contact these individuals it would be most helpful. The classmates that we need contact info for are:
Jo Ann Baker, Peggy Davis Bocook, Richard Allen Burton, Bonnie Dalenberg, Maggie Dameron, Elita DuVall, Kenneth and Terrie Bowling England, Jeffery Evans, Pam Hanshaw, Brenda Holbrook Plank, Harold James, Craig Kowalski, Charlotte Lemaster, Dottie Maddix, Eddie Messer, Darrell Nichols, Lenore Boggs Skaggs, William Flint Sparks, Susie Tackett, Tammy Taylor, and Christine Walters.
Our next meeting for planning our 30 Year class reunion will be Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Northeast Area Development Council building (White modular building.) The building is located at 539 Hitchens Ave. in Olive Hill. If you have any questions or contact info for classmates listed you may call Charlie Cooper at 286-6337.
Many Thanks,
Charlie Cooper

Editor,
Since 2005, Parents of Murdered Children has provided hundreds of crime victims and their families in our community with free access to counseling, mentoring and grief support. This access is made possible through the generous donations of members of our community.
We have never asked for donations for POMC to help with families. We were awarded the Hope II grant in 2007, but this resource is gone.
This year, our goal is to raise $10,000 to help offset costs in printed material, advertising, and promote training.
We hope you will join us in reaching our fundraising goal. A simple donation can be made, we are not asking for a certain amount. I understand that there are a lot of people asking for donations, but please understand we are a non-profit organization and remember the purpose of our organization.
You can also send a check payable to POMC Box 863 Grayson, KY 41143.
We sincerely thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Ann Bauers, Chapter President
Wilma Justice, Treasurer
Carter County Chapter of
Parents of Murdered Victims

Questions about Hitchins school
I am a member of the Hitchins Preservation Society and have worked various events to raise money to renovate the Hitchins High School buildings. I was shocked to read that Mr. Isaacs had given the school to the Christian school group. It had been my understanding that he had given it to the HPS several years ago.
