Or, so it seems.
Walk through the Veterans’ Park and it’s nowhere to be seen. No mention or honor afforded to its’ dead. Yet, it was the one war that was up close and personal. It touched the lives of every resident of the county and town as no other. A war that divided and then united the nation into a strong union, not its’ meaning and its’ cause dead and buried; no flowers on its’ grave…The Civil War.

Would someone please answer me a question? Who said slavery is over in America? Are we not all slaves to the system that has been “worked out” for us?
Me think I can hear a dialogue going on between a top executive of “Big Oil” and “Joe Six Pack Blue Collar Worker” way “Down upon the Swance River”. “Listen Boy” when I say jump I mean for you to say “How high”.
“Yes sir Boss, how high does you want me to jump this time”.
“Well now lets see, I think this times we want you to jump up to $5 a gallon.”
“Wait just a minute Boss. If you raise the price of our gasoline up that high, you are going to be taking Bread and Milk, right out of the mouths of our little children.”
“Shut your mouth you country ‘Red Neck’ and do as you are told. After all there is nothing you can do about it now, is there?”
“Hold on there just a minute. Just who gives you the right to raise gas prices so high?”
“Well now that’s a fair question. Everybody knows that the President and Vice President both are into “Big Oil” plum up to their eye balls, and you Senators and House members back us up almost 100%, we couldn’t buy off all of them.”
“ Yes Sir you are right. I always knew we had to best politicians money can buy. I just wonder how much of the Billions and Billions of dollars of profit you all make each year ends up in the pockets of the people we send up to Washington to represent us?”
“Well now boy listen to me. You all know all we ARISTOCRATS have to have millions of dollars a year to keep us going.”
“Yes Sir we know that. After all you all have to pay your ex-wives their alimony and you have to keep up your wife you are living right now, the there is that woman you are shacking up with on the side.” “I’ve always said the people we send up to Washington to represent us would sale their own mothers on the street of D.C. is there was a little money involved. Down here in Dixie we call that pimping.”
“Now listen here you two-bit greasy looking blue collar worker there are awful harsh words.”
“Yes Sir, but the truth will stand when the world’s on fire.”
“Well just look at that ‘Clown’ Ronald McConnell. He goes to off to D.C. and you never hear a word from him until four years roll around and then you get a letter from him wanting you to donate money to his re-election fund.”
“Don’t even mention ‘Goof Off’ Davis.”
“I think when these attorneys get so defective they can’t function on the local level they go National and off to Washington they go.”
“Up there with their ‘Ear Marks’ and their ‘Park Barrell’ projects they can take money right our of the U.S. Treasury and get tax payers money right into their own hands.”
“I know one thing for sure of our Representatives in D.C. don’t step up and stop this whole fiasco things in ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ will never be the same ‘No More’.

On behalf of the West Carter High School Class of 1978, I would like to thank “The Olive Hill Times” for their invaluable help in getting the word out about our class reunion which was held Saturday, June 14, at the Carter Caves State Resort Park. It was a great success. While we missed those who were unable to attend, those who were there enjoyed a memorable program, fine buffet meal, followed by music and fellowship. So thanks again to “The Olive Hill Times”.
Kudos goes to Carter Caves State Resort Park for their help. Thanks to the organizing committee for their sacrifice and time to contribute to the success of our class reunion. Thanks to David and Molly Carroll, Becky James, Bobbi Puckett, Jack Lowe, Freda Williams, Charles McDaniel, Marcella Clay, and Viola Waddell. If I have forgotten anyone I apologize. Also a special thank you to my wife, Twanita Cooper.
There is also available for sale a DVD for $15 (postage paid), which contains digitized photos from the West Carter High 1978 yearbook, including senior photos. This DVD contains “West Carter High School Class of 1978 Memories” and “We Remember” a short memorial to the classmates that we have lost. You can contact me if you are interested. A portion of the sales of the DVD will be donated to “Charlie’s Angels” Relay for Life Team/American Cancer Society.
Again thanks to all who helped make the 30 Year Class reunion of the WCHS of 1978 a remarkable event. Looking forward to our next reunion.
