Editor,

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu viruses spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with the flu. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their nose, eyes or mouth. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to pass on the flu to someone before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get a flu shot each year.

Everyone with diabetes six months of age and older should receive an annual flu shot. It is important to vaccinate everyone with diabetes (as well as their close contacts) since the vaccine prevents serious illness and complications. The Kentucky Department for Public Health reports that only _ of Kentuckians who have diabetes get a flu shot as recommended and that death rate among people with diabetes increase by 5% to 15%.

Your local health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would like you to know that it is never too late to get a flu shot. Flu vaccination can continue into December and even later. Experts anticipate more vaccine to be available this year than ever before and the flu season typically does not peak until February, leaving plenty of time to help protect anyone who wants to reduce his or her risk.

Editor,

During the last couple of weeks my articles have pertained to seeking information on my Hicks and my Berry families. This week I will be focusing on my biological mothers family, which isÉPridemore. My great, great grandparents in this bloodline were Daniel and Rebecca (Gilbert) Pridemore who were married in Floyd County, Kentucky on March 30, 1839. Rebecca was a daughter of Thomas and Susannah Gilbert. As I do this I will put in capital letters the names of those I directly decend from. The childred of Daniel Pridemore and Rebecca (Gilbert) Pridemore were..JOHN PRIDEMORE (born Oct. 1839), Sarah Pridemore (born Jan. 1841), Daniel Pridemore, Jr. (born Apr. 1843), Child4baby Pridemore (born 1845 and died in infancy), Child5baby Pridemore (born 1847 and no other information), Nancy Pridemore (born 1849), Ellender Pridemore (born 1850). Their children to this point were born in Floyd County, Kentucky. The following children that remain were born in

Carter County, Kentucky and they are..Susannah Pridemore (born 1852), Thomas Pridemore (born 1854), Jason Pridemore (born 1858), Linsey Pridemore (born 1860). The next generation I descend form would beÉJohn Pridemore and Margaret Salinda (Greene) Pridemore. Their children were..Elizabeth Pridemore (born 1860), Margaret (Georgia Pridemore (born 1862), John Pridemore (born 1864) James Taylor Pridemore (born 1871), ROBERT GREENE PRIDEMORE (born 1875 in Carter County). In 1897 John Pridemore married his second wife, Mary Allie Cooper and with her had the following two children..Jefferson Davis Pridemore (born 1898) and Forrest Pridemore (born 1901). The next generation I descend from is Robert Greene Pridemore and Sophia Lee (Coy) Pridemore.Their children are..Stanley Earl Pridemore (born 1910), MARY LOUISE PRIDEMORE (born 1912), Robert Lee Pridemore (born 1914), Beulah Mae Pridemore (born 1916), Ruby Bowlin Pridemore (born 1920) and Margaret

Elizabeth Pridemore (born 1922). My grandmother, the late Mary Louise Pridemore was born in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1912 and died in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1996. She was never married and had one child, out of wedlock, in 1934 who she named Ruby Lee. Due to not being married and feeling that her family would not understand she allowed her daughter to be adopted by her biological father, Daniel (Boone) Phipps and his wife, Nina (Wright) Phipps. Ruby Lee (Phipps) Kirk had four children..James Stephen Phipps (she kept), Thomas Anthony (Phipps) Carter who was adopted by Doctor A.D. Carterand his wife Rose, Terry Eugene (Phipps) Underwood who was adopted by Harless Underwood and his wife Ruth (Ramey) Underwood, and Jennifer Lynn (Phipps) Duncil who was adopted by Judd and Alma Duncil. Folks that would know, including Rubys older sister, have told me that the father of Thomas, Myself, and Jennifer was the man she did end up married to who was

Charles Lewis Kirk, Jr. Now, Charles Lewis Kirk, Jr. was a son of Charles Lewis Kirk, Sr. and Dollie (Berry) Kirk. He was a grandson of Thorne Kirk and Sarah (Burchett) Kirk and also George Allen Berry and America (Hicks) Hays, Berry, Shields. If you are related to anyone that has been mentioned here then you are related to me and I do hope and pray that you will contact me. I am looking for any and all geneology input that I can obrain on the following bloodlines that I am tied toÉBurchett, Kirk, and Coy. If you can help then I would be so grateful. Thanks to the late Ron Pridemore that lived in South Carolina I have a direct link to John and Anne (Higgins) Pridemore who were the first Pridemores to come to America from England in the 1600s so I am tied to all of the Pridemores. My next article will be on my mothers fathers family which isÉPhipps and in this family I have ties to a gospel singing group that at one time traveled around with the Carter Family so be on the lookout for that. If you would like to contact me then do so as followsÉ

May is Older American's Month, and this years theme is “Never Too Old To Play.” This theme encourages older Americans to stay active-physically, socially and mentally. Research shows that playing simple games, including electronics, can have a positive impact on older adults, and help prevent physical and cognitive decline.
