Searching for veterans
Editor,
We are trying to locate the many veterans that have passed through the 82nd Airborne Division in the past 66 years. We need to record their deeds for history for our younger generations.
The 82nd Airborne Division has served in Afghanistan and Iraq for the past few years and will return for another tour of duty. This is the most decorated division in today’s military.
We have 100 civilian chapters across the U.S.A., which serve both the military and civilians. With 34,000 members, we hold regular meetings, annual picnics, dinner-dances, mini reunions, an annual National Convention, local parades and sponsor school programs on our Airborne History.
Our membership has veterans from the 11th, 13th, 17th, 82nd, and 101st and today’s special forces. Combat is not a requirement, only the wings you earned through hard work and determination.
National Activities include: 63rd National Convention, August 19-22, 2009 in Indianapolis, Indiana. For complete details on events and membership contact Airborne 2008 at 5459 Northcutt Pl Dayton, Ohio 45414 or call 937-898-5977.
Respectfully submitted by,
Shirley R. Gossett, WWII
National Membership Chairman

Part 4
This week I will focus on my birth mothers fathers’ family that is... Phipps. Although I have my direct line going back to Joseph Phipps and Sarah (Binfield) Phipps who came to America in the 1600’s from England. I will begin this journey with the seven Phipps brothers from the 1700’s that I am told every Phipps alive today descends from. I will put the names of those in my direct line in capital letters. Those seven brothers were … John Phipps (born 1750), James Phipps (born 1751), Joseph Phipps, Jr. (born 1755), Benjamin Phipps (born 1761), Samuel Phipps (born 1762), Aaron Phipps (born 1768), and Isaiah Phipps (born 1769). Next in line are Samuel Phipps and Elizabeth (Betty) Reeves-Phipps. Their children were … John Phipps (born 1784), William Phipps (born 1785), Jesse Phipps (born 1788), Isaiah Phipps (born 1790), Benjamin (Big Ben) Phipps (born 1795), George (Devilish) Phipps (born 1796), and Joseph Phipps (born 1797). Next in line are Benjamin (Big Ben) Phipps and Rachel (Burnie) Phipps. The children of Big Ben and Rachel Phipps were … Jehu Phipps (born 1820), Eli Phipps (born 1824), Alex Phipps (born 1829), Loucinda Phipps (born 1833), Larkin Phipps (born 1835), David Phipps (born 1838), Martha Phipps (born 1842). Next in line are Jehu Phipps and Lucy (Austin) Phipps. Their children were … Sarah J. Phipps (born 1854), Thomas Phipps (born 1856), Cynthis Phipps (born 1858), and Samuel Ewell Phipps (born 1863). Next in line are Samuel Ewell Phipps and Frances (?) Phipps. Their children were … Sarah E. Phipps (born 1887), Thomas A. Phipps (born 1889), Annie Phipps (born 1892), Louella Phipps (born 1894), Lucy J. Phipps (born 1896), Samuel E. Phipps, Jr. (born 1898) and Daniel B. Phipps (born 1900). Next in line is Daniel B. Phipps that was my grandfather and was known simply as Boone Phipps. Now, Boone was married twice. His first wife was a Campbell and in this marriage he had two daughters. His first child was Louella (Phipps) Stidham, Wooton, Huff. His second daughter was Irene (Phipps) Ball, Napier, Blevins. His second marriage was to Nina (Wright) Phipps. This marriage produced no children. He did have a child out of wedlock with Mary Louise Pridemore who he and Nina adopted, and her name was Ruby Lee (Phipps) Kirk and she was my mother. Last week I mentioned that through the Phipps bloodline that I had a tie to a gospel group that traveled around with The Carter Family. Well, this group, which some of you may remember, was called the Phipps Family. They did fifteen gospel recordings and made their home in Barbourville, Knox County. The Phipps Family consisted of A. L. Phipps, Kathlene Phipps (his wife), and Trulene (Phipps) Morgan, his daughter. Now, A.L. Phipps oldest daughter is named Louella. My grandfather, Boone Phipps, had a sister named Louella. A coincidence? I think not. How close I am in kin to the late A.L. Phipps I do not know but I do know we were related. If anyone is reading this is related then please contact me as follows: Terry Underwood, Gospel In Song Ministries, P.O. Box 952 Loyall, Kentucky 40854 or call (606) 664-2884.
My grandfather, Boone Phipps, wrote the following as poems that ended up being recorded as songs … Just A Rose Will Do, Mama Like The Roses, and Where The Roses Never Fade. I have done 10 gospel music recordings on cds and have recorded Where The Roses Never Fade. I have also made 13 gospel DVD recordings. If you would like to receive information on my cd and DVD recordings then please send me a self addressed stamped envelope.
Thank You and God Bless You.
Terry Underwood,
Loyall, KY

Questions about Hitchins school
I am a member of the Hitchins Preservation Society and have worked various events to raise money to renovate the Hitchins High School buildings. I was shocked to read that Mr. Isaacs had given the school to the Christian school group. It had been my understanding that he had given it to the HPS several years ago.
