Jan. 7, 2008 — Fire department museum
Editor,
As a charter member of the Hayes Crossing/Haldeman Volunteer Fire Department, I would like to make a suggestion that would involve all 120 county and city fire departments in the state of Kentucky.
I feel like its time to establish a Kentucky Fire Department Museum. Contributions of Fire Department history could come from every Fire Department in Kentucky. Since we have several hundred Fire Departments in Kentucky.
An old tobacco warehouse not being used would make a very suitable place to display trucks and equipment.
If possible, the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Legislature could explore the potential for such a project. It would bring very positive publicity to the state of Kentucky.
Volunteer and paid Fire Departments have contributed to past history of this state and we need to preserve it if all possible.

Carter Nursing and Rehab
Editor,
The residents and employees at Carter Nursing and Rehab Center are so thankful for a wonderful community and such caring and loving people who always make the Christmas holidays at our home very special.
Many, many churches, clubs, organizations, schools, girl scouts, and individuals visited with us bringing their love and the Christmas spirit. Our halls echoed daily with beautiful Christmas carols and many special gifts were provided for our residents. Each and everyone are appreciated and with people like you, we have a glorious holiday.
May God bless and keep each of you through the New Year!
Remember our doors are always open and you are welcome to visit anytime!

School Board Member Recognition Month
Editor,
In difficult economic times like these, a community’s elected officials face incredible challenges. Often, they are required to make choices and decisions that they never dreamed they might face when agreeing to offer themselves up for public service. It’s called being a leader, and our community is fortunate to have five such individuals on the Carter County Board of Education.
Kentucky’s January observation of School Board Member Recognition Month provides a perfect opportunity to honor the contributions being made daily by Robert Flaugher, Bryan Greenhill,
David Jessie, Chris Patrick, and Randy Steagall.
Serving on a local school board has always been more than what the public sees: meetings once or twice a month and occasional tough issues such as the school year calendar, dress codes or drug testing and attendance boundaries.
But beyond that, our board members play a very real role in moving our schools and our students forward toward the goal of proficiency (and beyond) in achievement within the next five years.
Our Board Members help spread the word about individual as well as the collective successes of our students and our professional staff. They certainly have every student and staff member’s best interest at heart!
This year they will face perhaps the greatest test of their leadership as we work to ensure that tight financial situations don’t translate into a step backward in the learning development of our students.
Yes, these are tough times and this community is fortunate to have a team of dedicated men on the Carter County Board of Education who are champions both of fiscal responsibility and community progress. They do this because they know that the future of this community, state and nation depends on a better-educated set of leaders and workers, parents and citizens at large coming out of our classrooms.
On behalf of our students, on behalf of our faculty and staff, and personally on my own behalf as superintendent, I want to publicly say “thank you” to our board members and join in a community salute to these for their vital service.
Sincerely,
Darlene Gee, Superintendent
