Letters to the Editor

Feb. 25, 2009 — Editor,

The KAAC 16th Region Governor’s Cup Competition scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, was forced to postpone a portion of their annual event due to an unexpected snowstorm. The community of Russell apparently suffered an unprecedented natural phenomena Friday night when the freakish snowstorm struck causing the school officials to deem the trip too treacherous for a bus to travel the 15 miles to the event.

Fortunately, some distant schools in the region had already made the trip to Boyd Co. Friday evening with all of their participants and secured lodging, thereby avoiding the dangerous road conditions. Other schools in the region were able to make the trip Saturday morning without incident as it was sunny and 50º at Boyd Co. High School where the event was hosted.

In previous years, the failure of a team to come to the event resulted in forfeiture, irregardless of weather conditions, but this year in a gesture of extreme compassion, the KAAC agreed to postpone the written examination portion of the competition until the following Thursday. The Quick Recall portion of the tournament was held as scheduled and miraculously all of Russell’s dedicated team except one managed to be there and won the event in spite of their harrowing ordeal. (It is rumored that the NOAA’s National Weather Service will be interested in investigating this highly unusual weather event.)

In a sad footnote to this historic weather event, several of the schools will be unable to make the return trip Thursday due to their school’s financial constraints, thereby eliminating the opportunity of multiple students to earn a place in the prestigious state competition. Perhaps Russell, in appreciation for the leniency granted them, will see fit to help will the expenses of these less fortunate school districts.

  • Questions about Hitchins school

I am a member of the Hitchins Preservation Society and have worked various events to raise money to renovate the Hitchins High School buildings. I was shocked to read that Mr. Isaacs had given the school to the Christian school group. It had been my understanding that he had given it to the HPS several years ago.
