April 15, 2009 — Upset over robbery

Editor,

I didn't realize just how far our community has slide.

My sister was robbed in her home last Wednesday. A girl who asked to use the phone took her billfold, money and credit cards.

The girl is well known to police officers, as this is not her first robbery, or even her 5th. The sheriff's office was notified, and a deputy was sent.

However he was little help, stating when they try to arrest her, she won't come to the door. What happened to search warrants? He went on to say she was probably using her ATM card in town right now. Wander why he didn't contact the bank, and warn them to notify if she used the card? He was right about one thing; she did try several attempts to get money out with the card. My sister called the bank and asked if the image they got would be enough to identify this girl. The bank employee said the deputy must come in with the report and check the image.

As of this day the deputy has not notified the bank or my sister.

What is the world coming to - when we see things like this happen in our own homes?

If the drug pushers are not stopped, noon will be safe behind locked doors.

I urge everyone to contact his or her legislators and voice concern. The next victim may be you or a loved one, and they may not be as lucky as my sister. It is time that all law-abiding citizens speak up.

Carter County Thunder

Editor,

I must begin by saying Thanks! Many of you who are reading this are responsible for the tremendous success “Carter County Thunder” has had as a community project in Carter County. I am excited to announce that this year’s Independence Celebration is set for July 3, at the Carter County Fairgrounds. The opportunity to celebrate our freedoms, while spending an evening enjoying live music and spectacular fireworks among family and friends, all Free of admission, truly is a priceless commodity.

Nashville recording group Taylor Made will be the headlining performer for Thunder 2009. They are signed with WeBlast records and managed by DMP, Inc. DMP, Inc. is owned by Dale Morris, who has managed the legendary country group Alabama since before they were even called Alabama. From their website www.taylormadecountry.com you will see they are currently ranked near the top of the New Music Weekly country charts with their hit single, “Heavy Duty Beauty.” Taylor Made is scheduled to open for Gretchen Wilson at the WV State fair in July and for Alabama star Randy Owen in August. Their other major accomplishments include the following: • The recently released Album “Perfect Fit”; • Opened for Sugarland; • Opened for Charlie Daniels; • Opened for LoneStar; and, • Opened for Randy Travis.

With the recent return of the 201st Engineer Battalion our community has much to celebrate this year. As the Event Coordinator I aspire to improve upon “Thunder 2008,” and with very valuable assistance from the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce, The Carter County Fair Board, and the Grayson Tourism and Convention Commission, to orchestrate another memorable celebration. The Carter County Fairgrounds is the wonderful venue for Thunder, and as in the past I approach each event as if it were an audition for something bigger to come in the future.

This project is only feasible thanks to your generous sponsorship. Contributions of any amount will be gratefully accepted. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Partners will be encouraged to hang their company logo or banner on stage.

A sponsorship deadline of Friday, May 29, has been set. Checks should be made to the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce and sent to the Chamber Office at P.O. Box 612, Grayson, KY 41143.

EC junior baseball team

Editor,

I am a sponsor coordinator for the East Carter Raiders AAU Boys Basketball team. This team is made up of 6, 7, and 8 grad boys from East Carter Middle School.

We would be grateful for your help in sponsoring our team. We are in need of funds to purchase uniforms, pay tournament fees, and various other expenses that the team will incur.

We will be hosting a tournament on April 17 and 18 to help raise funds for the newly established East Carter Junior High Baseball team. This newly established team is still unfunded and needs our help. This tournament will give our boys the chance to improve their basketball skills, help bring business into Carter County, and mostly help our community in a positive way.

If you are unable to sponsor our team with funds, but are able to sponsor in some way, please contact one of the coordinators listed below; we can arrange for someone to pick up the items. We will need supplies for a concession stand, money to pay referees, or assistance at the door. All sponsors will be acknowledged at the beginning of the tournament.

Thank you for any help you can give our team with this project and with our summer season. If you are able to donate with a check please make it payable to East Carter Raiders Boys Basketball AAU or Steve/Gina Thomas. You can contact or mail your check to one of the coordinators listed below.

Thanks again for your help,

Steve and Gina Thomas
