Urging women to vote
Editor,
This letter is for us ladies. I'm writing to encourage all ladies to vote.
There was a time not so far back when we didn't have the right to vote. Thanks to the Women's Suffrage we have a right to take part of the governing of our county and state.
In the beginning only single women and widows were allowed to vote. In 1920 Woodrow Wilson urged Congress to pass an amendment prohibiting state and federal agencies form gender-based restrictions on voting.
The country Bhutan only voted to allow women to vote in 2008.
The right to vote is why we have so many women working at the county and state level.
So, please don't take the right to vote for granted. Go exercise your right to vote on May 18.

GEMS says “thank you”
Editor,
On behalf of the “City of Grayson’s” Emergency Management (GEMS), we would like to say thank you to the many volunteers, who opened and maintained the shelter at the First Church of Christ during the recent flooding. Whether it was a large or small act of kindness, each one had a meaning to the families that were helped. One act made a positive difference in someone’s life.
We greatly appreciate the members of the First Church of Christ, who gave permission for the church to be used as a shelter. Special thanks goes to Brett Wells, who was instrumental in opening the shelter for the City. We want to thank those volunteers, who provided aid to the shelter residents – Becky Walker and Donna Lucas of the Salvation Army, Vickie James of the American Red Cross, and Lorrie Shellabarger, who contributed needed supplies.
Thanks to Gerald Haney of Grayson Utilities and his staff, who played a positive role in maintaining the water situation. We greatly appreciated Jim Phillips of WGOH-WUGO radio for keeping residents and businesses informed of vital information.
A special thanks of appreciation goes to the City’s EOC staff members, who contributed their time – Sherman Berry, Jim Speaks, Elaine Wiler, and Rosa Stone.
Because of you, the Emergency Management Services is proud to be a part of the City with a big “heart”.

Thanks for rescuing horse
Editor,
The Griffith and Griffey families of Deer Hollow would like to extend a heart-felt thank-you to Jim Roark of Grayson for helping to rescue “Rock” the percheron draft horse from a muddy death-trap last week.
Jim used his backhoe to help release Rock from the waist deep mud that threatened his life. After 4 hours of work, Jim wouldn’t take any money for his efforts. He is truly a hometown hero!
Thanks,
Denisa Griffey and family
Time for a change
Editor,
It is time for changes in our county officials. It is time for all Carter Countians to fire some of the county officials. We have some job openings up this May 2010.
The first job opening is Carter County Sheriff. I think everyone is getting fed up with the current way the sheriff is running his office. We all know only a certain people are being arrested or issued citations from the sheriff's department. He also has a drug officer within his department, but we all see, there are no drug-related arrests. So, if you like the way the sheriff is running his office, rehire him.
The second job is Carter County Jailer. If you like the way that the wife is running the jail, rehire the current jailer. If you are fed up with all the waste of money in the jail and all the civil suits that have been paid off, the civil suits that haven't went to court yet, and the civil suits that are being filed in the months ahead, fire the current jailer this May 18.
There will be more chances to fire other officials come the November General Election.
Thank you,
Billy Barker
Grayson
