Dec. 23, 2009 — Christmas Gifts

Editor,

I was Christmas shopping the other night at one of the retail stores. I passed the toy section and just glanced down the isles as I went by, expecting to see some excited children pointing out things they wanted for Christmas to their moms and dads. But what I seen broke my heart. A woman is a wheel chair holding a box with both arms wrapped around it up tight against her chest and tears running down her face. A man and young child was standing there with her in the isle looking down at the floor.

I felt the box she was holding with a little toy truck in it was not for the child standing there, but for one that was no longer here with them. The one gift they really wanted this Christmas was not to have the toy, but to have the child to hold in their arms.

It makes you ask why does God take away the good and leave the bad. It came to me that it was kind of like this – you wouldn't go out to your rose bush to pick the thorns or the dried up flowers. You would take the best flowers and carry them in to brighten up your house. And, that is what God does. Some people are just too good for this world and their time here is short. They spread so much joy to so many in such a short time while they are here. It takes more than a lifetime to get over missing them when they are gone.

No matter how many times you tell them you love them while they are here, it doesn't seem like enough when they are gone. For those loved ones you still have here with you and can say I love you to – say it as many times as you can and as often as you can.

Love one another is the greatest gift of all to give.

Have a Merry Christmas in Heaven and on Earth.

Grayson

Clarification

Editor,

In a recent article titled fiscal court meets by Tonia Rose, there were a few mistakes. First of all, Tom Thompson is E-911 director and not EMS director. Also, I find out that there is GPS in only four ambulances and not all the trucks. And, what I said about being too lazy to punch addresses in – well – I apologize for that remark. It seemed to disturb a lot of people and for that I apologize.

Thank you,

Tom Thompson

Carter County E-911 Director

What if?

Editor,

As the heads of states and the leaders of nations gather to debate global warming and climate change, glacier melting and sea levels rising, all supposed to be the result of careless man - I read again the findings of the court of inquiry held in December 1944 of the great typhoon in the South China sea that engulfed the mighty third fleet of the U.S. Navy in WWII.

Three ships were sunk, many severely damaged, 120 air craft lost, and over 800 sailors were drowned. It was three days and three nights of sheer terror. Winds were clocked at 160 miles an hour and waves recorded 90 feet high. That any ship or man survived was a miracle.

Not too long ago there was a part of that storm shown on the History Channel. As I watched, I recalled some of what I felt at that time, although no words can describe fear of that magnitude. I have said all this in order to say this – from Psalm 107: 23-26: “They that do down to the sea in ships that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For He commandeth and raiseth the stormy wind which lifted up the waves there of, they mount up to the Heaven, they go down again to the depths.”

No global warming mentioned there as the cause. So, what if God is right that He is in control of the climate He created? If the planet is to be saved from ruin, as is claimed cause by man, we surely can't do that on our own. God Himself will do it.

“If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray...I will heal their land,” Now, what if we don't do that? What then?

Eternal Father strong to save – whose arm does rule the restless wave

Oh hear us when we pray to thee – For those in peril on the sea.

  • Questions about Hitchins school

I am a member of the Hitchins Preservation Society and have worked various events to raise money to renovate the Hitchins High School buildings. I was shocked to read that Mr. Isaacs had given the school to the Christian school group. It had been my understanding that he had given it to the HPS several years ago.
