Apparently, old dogs can learn new tricks.
The old adage was proven wrong last week when Grayson's oldest business installed the latest technology in an effort to combat shoplifting and prevent break-ins. Horton and Brown Pharmacy on Main Street in Grayson opened in 1886. Mike Akers has owned the business for four and a half years, but the pharmacist saw a big problem.
“Shoplifting can ruin a business,” Akers said. “We wanted to install a system in the store that could help with that and make sure our employees and customers are safe.”
Akers watched as a small crew from Olive Hill's Lykins Insur- ance Company installed the Police Watch security system into the 127-year-old business.
Luckily, Horton and Brown have not been affected by the prescription pill abuse problem—yet.
“I have worked in larger, chain store pharmacies that have had break ins for pills,” Akers said. “We expected it over the years, but it hasn’t touched us yet.”
Akers, a hands-on owner who fills pre- scriptions and carries stock from the back, said there was no way he could monitor cameras himself.
“It is hard to stay on top of it all the time,” Akers said. “This system seems to be the best there is.”
The Police Watch system was introduced to the Carter County area two years ago. The system was first installed in the schools, connecting the county's youth to first responders in real time.
“If it cuts down on shoplifting and no one breaks in, we have done our job,” Donny Lykins, Lykins Insur- ance and Security owner, said. “No one wants to deal with the hassle of prosecution, but we will if it is necessary.” The two-day install was completed last week, and the pharmacy was online with the local dispatch. If Horton and Brown employees are faced with an emergency situation, the system is activated and dispatch can see what is happening.
Lykins will present the system to the State School Board next month.
