Amerigold Jewelers on Main Street in Grayson will not buy your unwanted gold. They buy very little, but customers looking for unique and unusual pieces now have a place to buy rare gifts.
Amerigold owner Jim Woods has been in the jewelry business for 26 years. Although he isn’t a Carter County native, he has family and land in the area.
“We don’t carry the stuff you’ll find in the mall,” Woods said. “The people who buy jewelry in the mall may not be interested in the pieces here.”
That’s because Woods carries pieces that aren’t mass produced. From earrings he designed himself, molded from a freeze dried juniper leaf, to pieces by award winning jewelry designer Kyriakos Somos, Woods says you won’t find these pieces anywhere near here.
“Although the pieces aren’t all one of a kind, they are rare,” Woods said. “We are going to do our best to change the way the town looks.”
The Somos Collection is full of pieces Woods calls “innovative.” The collection led to several awards, including four DeBeers Diamonds Awards, The World Gold Council Gold Trends Award, The American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Award, The Signity Colored Gemstone Competition, The American Pearl Vision Award and the Platinum Millennium Award.
Woods isn’t worried about bringing such a prestigious collection to a small town like Grayson. He said that people will travel for the name alone.
“These pieces are not pawn shop jewelry,” Woods said as he showed off a brooch depicting a lily, sculpted out of gold, pearls and emeralds.
“These pieces will be passed down for generations, because they use all natural, unenhanced stones.”
Woods also designs his own pieces, which are truly one of a kind. His custom work can be completely from his imagination or from an idea.
Amerigold will have a new wedding set collection coming in soon from California, hopefully just in time for Valentine’s Day. They also offer hand engraving, jewelry repair, and $5 watch battery replacement while you wait.
“There is not a shop like this anywhere,” Woods said. “We want to be able to help everyone in the area with services, but also offer something they can’t find anywhere near here. It is important for us to not only serve the community’s needs, but also to bring people from other places here.”
Amerigold Jewelers is located at 112 East Main Street in Grayson.
