Shasteen wins Appakids Card Contest

Feb. 16, 2011 —     Shaleigh Shasteen is a quiet girl.

Although she didn’t say anything during her time at the Journal-Times office, the eight-year-old did create several impressive art pieces now hanging on the office wall. As a third grade student in Janie Potter’s class at Prichard Elementary, Shaleigh’s favorite past time is coloring. Her passion for art is going to a good cause: benefitting children’s programming in Carter County and Appalachia.

Shaleigh won the cutest pumpkin at the 2010 Carter County Octoberfest, but the photo she drew in the AppaKids booth has been turned into a note card being sold for a non-profit fund raiser.

The AppaKids program helps any Appalachian child unlock his or her creative talents by providing activities focused on Appalachian arts and entrepreneurship. The AppaKids initiative also fosters a sense of pride in children for their unique heritage. AppaKids is part of the Center for Appalachian Philanthropy, which operates in the central Appalachian region, assisting the distressed and at-risk counties of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. In Kentucky, AppaPhil aids Carter, Elliott, Floyd, Johnson, Lawrence, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, and Morgan counties.

Shaleigh’s drawing is one of six in a package of note cards being sold by the organization to raise money for their philanthropic efforts.

“The lady at the booth told us we would be contacted if her drawing was chosen,” Tammy Shasteen, Shaleigh’s mother, said. “She has been really excited about it since we got the letter. Family, friends, and people at her school are buying the card set just because she has a card in it.”

Shaleigh and her family made Carter County their home after fleeing Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Both Shaleigh’s father, Scott, and her mother are happy that their daughter is able to give back.

“It’s nice to see that even the little kids can help the community,” said her father.  “There are so many bad things that go on everywhere. Shaleigh gets the chance to help and that feels good.”

The note card set can be purchased online at www.AppaKids.com.
