April 15: Hitchins Got Talent will be on stage Friday, April 15, 6 p.m. at the Isaacs Performing Arts Center (Old Hitchins School).



April 15: The Carter County Skateboarding Association skaters and parents will meet on Thursday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. to continue making sketches for their skatepark. They will meet at the First Church of Christ Family Life Center, Third & Pomeroy Streets in Grayson.  Skaters will make a trip to Louisville Skatepark on Saturday, April 17, leaving the church parking lot at 8 a.m. Contact Andy Tomaselli at 475-9626 or www.cartercountykyskaters.com for more information.



April 16: Johnathan Buckner & Chosen Road will be performing Friday, April 16, 7 p.m. at the Isaacs Performing Arts Center (Old Hitchins School). The Stinson Church of Christ Puppet Ministry will make a special appearance. Tickets are $8.



April 16: The Olive Hill Little League parade is set for Friday, April 16, 6:30 p.m. starting at Olive Hill Elementary School and will end at the Little League ball field.



April 16: National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is Friday, April 16, 2010. Community Hospice is taking part in a nationwide initiative to promote living wills and advanced directives. As part of National Healthcare Decisions Day, Community Hospice will be hosting public events on Friday, April 16 to educate the public about living wills. They will be at the Boyd Co. Public Library, Ashland branch, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.; Boyd Co. Public Library, Summit Branch, 2 – 3 p.m.; and Briggs Lawrence Co. Library, South Point, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Community Hospice representatives will give a brief presentation and be available to answer questions. They will also have living will/advance directive forms available. Community Hospice representatives are available to speak to any club, group, church, organization or business with details about living wills. April 16-17: The Free Clothing Center at Bible Baptist Church, off Rt. 2 in Olive Hill, will be open April 16, 6 - 8 p.m. and April 17, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.



April 16 - 18: El Hasa Shriners will host their bi-annual antiques and collectibles show April 16-18, at the El Hasa Shrine Center, 13450 St. Rt. 180, Ashland. This will be the fourth show that the shriners have hosted. Each show roves to be bigger and better with over 50 vendors. This is sure to be one of the best shows in the area. This spring show will be open for those "early birds" at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 16, with admission for the whole weekend at $10. The show will continue on Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 18, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with admission being charged at $3 each day. Concessions will be available for breakfast and lunch each day for vendors and customers alike. Lots of level parking and accessibility for everyone. April 17: "Music on the Ridge" Bluegrass music show will be held Saturday, April 17, 7 a.m. at the Rattlesnake Ridge Community Center, Rt. 3295, near Grayson Lake. April 17: Rattlesnake Ridge Genealogy Group will meet Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Rattlesnake Ridge Community Center. This is an informational gathering with no admission fee. April 19: The last day to register to vote for the primary election on May 18, will be April 19.



April 19: The Carter County Board of Education will meet April 19, 6:30 p.m. at the West Carter Middle School.



April 20: East Carter High School Child Development classes are providing a free Little Raider Playschool for children 3-5 years of age. April 20: The Carter County Women Democrat meeting will be held at Shoney's Restaurant in Grayson at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20.  All members are encouraged to attend and to bring a friend.



April 20: The Olive Hill High School Alumni and Friends Association will have a meeting to plan for their annual reunion on Tuesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall. All alumni are invited to participate.



April 20: The Kentucky Blood Center will be conducting a blood drive Tuesday, April 20, noon - 4 p.m. at Ashland Sales and Service, 190 W. Carter Dr. in Olive Hill.

 

April 24: Bluegrass and BBQ on the Hill with Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out is planned for Saturday, April 24, 7 p.m. at the Olive Hill Center for Arts and Education

(Historic Olive Hill High School) in Olive Hill and presented by the Olive Hill Historical Society. Tickets are $15 and $10 in advance or at the door. BBQ plate will be $6 and other concessions will be available. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Depot, downtown Olive Hill, beginning March 18 - Thursdays and Fridays: noon – 5 p.m. and Saturdays: 9 a.m. – noon. April 24: Carter County Day for the Cincinnati Reds game is Saturday, April 24.   Tickets are half-price for that day.  Good $34 seats are $17. For more information go to WUGO/WGOH website or go by their studio to purchase tickets.



April 24: The Hitchins Preservation Society invites the public to a "Meet the Candidates Forum", Saturday, April 24, 1 p.m. at the IPAC on the campus of  the old Hitchins School, St. Hwy. 773 Hitchins, Ky. The forum will be open to all candidates on the Primary ballot regardless of party or status.  This is purely an ad hoc grassroots event based on our exercise of our First Amendment Rights.  HPS neither endorses or opposes any candidate or party. Dinners will be available for sale and their snack bar will be open.  Each candidate will be bringing a dessert item, which will be auctioned.



April 24: Come join the US Army Corps of Engineers at Grayson Lake on Saturday April 24, to celebrate Earth Day 2010. Work will take place on the environmental field and trail in the below dam recreation area. Activities will start at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Those attending should dress appropriately for the weather. For more information contact the Corps of Engineers at 606.474.5815.



April 26: Backyard Bloomer Garden Club will have a "plant exchange" at the Grayson City Park April 26, 5 p.m.



April 26: An Upper Tygart School reunion is being planned for all students and teachers. A meeting to begin the planning process will be at the Globe Christian Church fellowship building, April 26, 7 p.m. For more information call Willis Bond at 286.2652 or Linda Rayburn at 286.4854.



April 27: The 5th Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 27, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Sonny Fankell Farm. The Easter bunny and live animals will be present with pictures available.



April 27 - 29: Carter County Spring Cleanup in the East end of the county is set for April 27 - 29.



April 30: Idletymes will be performing Friday, April 30, 7 p.m. at the Isaacs Performing Arts Center (old Hitchins School). Admission will be $10. Concessions will be sold. All proceeds will go to the Hitchins Preservation Society.



April 30 - May 17: The absentee voting machine will be open for voters who qualify starting April 30, 10 a.m. - May 17, 4 p.m. Carter County Clerk office hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Tuesday - 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - noon.



April 30: Idol Tymes will be performing Friday, April 30, 7 p.m. at the Isaacs Performing Arts Center (Old Hitchins School).



May 1: The Rt. 504 Volunteer Fire Department will have their annual Spring Fish Fry with a cake and pie auction on Saturday, May 1. The fish fry will be from 1 – 4 p.m. with the auction around 4 p.m. The meal will consist of fish, chicken, potato wedges, huspuppies, cole slaw, a drink and dessert. It will cost $6 for adults, $3 for children 4-12, and children under three eat free. Political candidates will be given a time slot to speak starting around 3 p.m. with a special pie auction. Only those candidates running for that particular office may bid on that particular pie. There will also be live music. Everyone welcome to come and support the fire department.



May 1: Old Time Machinery & Antique Association 2010 scholarship applications for high school seniors are available at East & West Carter High Schools. You can pick up one in your counselors office at the schools. Deadline for the applications to be mailed in is Saturday, May 1.



May 1: 2010 2nd Annual May Flowers Beauty Pageant will be held on May 1st at the Carl Perkins Center in Morehead. Deadline to enter is April 15. May 1: Join the US Army Corps of Engineers at Grayson Lake on Saturday, May 1, to celebrate Arbor Day 2010. Activities will start at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Those participating will be planting trees around the project to improve wildlife habitat and beautify the park. Meet at the Corps of Engineers office at 9 a.m.



May 4: Legal Aid of the Bluegrass' FIVCO State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), a non-profit organization, has been giving a helping hand to people with Medicare in navigating the healthcare maze for many years. The focus of the FIVCO SHIP Program is to educate and assist Medicare beneficiaries and the elderly in making informed decisions regarding benefits based on their circumstances and needs. The program is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with its mission. The FIVCO SHIP Program will be conducting a volunteer training on May 4. May 4 - 6: Carter County Cleanup in the West end of the county is set for May 4 - 6.



May 8: A benefit will be held at Happy Trails Campgrounds on Cribbs Hill in Grayson May 8, for Phillip and Patricia Wilson, a family who lost everything in a house fire. June 10 - 11: The Official GED Testing at ECCAEC on June 10th and 11th.



June 18: The Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a golf scramble at Hidden Cove Golf Course at Grayson Lake State Park on Friday, June 18. July 2: Lincoln Theinert with Carter County Thunder, Inc. has announced that Andy Griggs will be the headline performer for Carter County Thunder 2010 scheduled for Friday, July 2, at the Carter County Fairgrounds. July 2-3: Seven Cities Outreach will be doing Freedom Fest, with emphasis on youth, July 2nd and 3rd at Boone’s Landing at Louisa. This will be primarily contemporary and rock Christian bands with guest speakers between bands. The event will be Friday,6-10 p.m. and Saturday from noon – 10 p.m. Seven Cities Outreach has been doing many indoor events this year and Freedom Fest will be a great outdoor ministry festival. The Bowling Cemetery at Hitchins is now seeking donations for upkeep and maintenance during the 2010 summer mowing season.  Donations can be made by either mailing them to Alice Bradford Dingee- P.O. Box 25 Hitchins, KY 41146 or to City National Bank -Bowling Cemetery Fund - Carol Malone Blvd.  Grayson, KY 41143. Donation area needed for the upkeep of Haney’s Cemetery on Sutton. Donations can be sent to Ruth Haney at 117 East Mains Street in Grayson. Donations care badly needed.



Donations are being accepted for the upkeep and all maintenance (mowing) of the Carroll Cemetery on Rattlesnake Ridge. There is a country music show each Saturday night, 8 – 11 p.m. at Fort Falls, 106 Carter Caves Road, Olive Hill, featuring the Fort Falls house band. They offer good snack food all night, a nice dance floor and half-half drawing. There is a small charge at the door. For more information, call Anita Kitchen at 286.8485. Everyone is welcome.

The Grayson Branch of Basket of Hope began its Annual Toy Drive in area churches on Easter Sunday and will continue through the month of April. Collection containers are located in area churches and also in 'My Second Home' on Main Street in Grayson. Board games and Barbie dolls are currently being collected for baskets. A tax deductible, monetary donation can be made with checks payable to the Nicholas Yancy Nischan Foundation, Basket of Hope and mailed to Kim Bush, 231 E. Sunset Hill, Grayson, KY 41143.
