May 12, 2010 — May 13: Grayson R.E.C.C.'s Annual meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 13 at East Carter Middle School. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and the business meeting begins at 7 p.m. All members are invited to spend the evening with the people that work for you every day at Grayson R.E.C.C., while enjoying free refreshments. All members that register will receive a bucket of bulbs and will be eligible for several door prizes. Several information booths will be available. We will award $1,000 college scholarships to seven well-deserving seniors. The Grayson Rural Electric business office will close at 3:30 on Thursday, May 13. Join us for the 2010 Grayson Annual Meeting.



 May 13: The Old Time Machinery & Antique Association monthly meeting and annual picnic will be this Thursday, May 13 at 6:30 pm, at their showgrounds on Rt. 7, about three miles south of Grayson. Members are asked to attend and bring a covered dish for the picnic. Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month.



May 14: Sunny Inc. announces their annual Mother and Father of the Year Essay Contest. It is open to all residents of Carter County. The deadline for entry is May 14. For more information and contest rules, call 474.9522. Prizes and trophies will be awarded.



May 15 and May 22: Carter County Schools will be in session on two Saturdays, May 15 and May 22, to make up the days missed after the recent flash flood. Students will be dismissed two hours early on these days.



May 15: There will be a Bluegrass Music Show at the Rattlesnake Ridge Community Center (located St. Route 3295 - 3.8 miles West of Grayson Lake) on Saturday, May 15, featuring David Carroll & New River Line Band. May 15: A Christian Rock Concert is planned for Saturday, May 15, beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Slone's Market in Grayson. The concert will feature Point of Origin 6 – 6:45 p.m.; The Chris Feller Band 7 – 7:45 p.m.; COG 8 – 8:45 p.m.; Bellor 9 – 9:45 p.m.; Faded 10 – 10:45 p.m.; What Drives the Weak 11 – 11:45 p.m. Admission is free. Donations will be appreciated. 



May 15: There will be a benefit auction for seniors at the Carter County Senior Citizens' Center on May 15, 11 a.m. The center is located at 200 Hord Street, Grayson. Delmar Rogers will be the auctioneer. There will be mostly new items, too numerous to mention. May 15: Calling all nature lovers, hunters, anglers, boaters and everyone else who enjoys the park. Join the US Army Corps of Engineers on May 15, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grayson Lake boat ramp.  Dress appropriately for the weather.  In the event of rain, the event will be held on May 22 from 9 – 2.  This is your chance to help clean up the park for another season of fun.  Boaters are encouraged to bring their boats.  For more information contact the Corps of Engineers at 606-474-5815.



May 15: First annual Autism Awareness Walk will be held in the city of Morehead on Saturday, May 15, 2 p.m. This is a free event and we hope that everyone comes out to walk and show your support for our community. Make sure to wear bright colors or any autism awareness shirts that you have. The walk will start at the Moonlight Stage on First street. Registration will began at 2 p.m. and then the walk will began at 2:20. We will be walking up to the Folk Art center then up to main street, then back at the Moonlight Stage. After the walk, the Opossum Trot Blues Band will be playing music for us to enjoy. The activities will end around 5 p.m. We will be selling pizza, bake sale items, pop, and water to raise money for Rowan County Project Lifesaver. This event is to bring awareness to Autism, take pride in all of our difference, and to raise money for life saving system that many elder and children with special needs could use. If you would like to make a donation to Project lifesaver, checks need to be made out to R.C. Project Lifesaver/ Fire Wise. May 15: ENOUGH is sponsoring political stump speeches Saturday, May 15, beginning at noon at Super 8 Motel in Grayson. (It was previously scheduled at Heritage Elementary, but due to Saturday school being scheduled, the location had to be changed.) All candidates are encouraged to attend and each will be given three minutes to present their platform. Each candidate is asked to furnish a pie or cake, which will be auctioned off after the speeches. Donations will go to ENOUGH to aid in Drug Awareness, Prevention, and Rehabilitation in Carter County, including Lifeline of Carter County and Teen Challenge of KY. May 16: “Blessing of the Bikes”, hosted by the Holy Rollers Motorcycle Ministry will be held May 16, 10:30 a.m. At New Beginnings Assembly of God in Grayson.Prizes will be given away. A limited number of t-shirts will be given away to bikers who ride in on a bike. Dinner will be served after the morning service. A ride will follow dinner. May 16: There will be a fish fry at the Willard Lodge #626 F & A.M. on Sunday, May 16, 1 – 3 p.m.



May 17: Absentee voting will be open through Monday, May 17 at the Carter County Courthouse during regular business hours.



May 18: The Olive Hill High School Alumni and Friends Association will be having a planning meeting for their annual high school reunion onTuesday, May 18, at 6 p.m. at the Olive Hill Historical Building gymnasium. May 19: Join McDonalds in helping to support the Flood Relief for the people of Olive Hill.  McDonalds of Olive Hill will donate a portion of their profits from the following days to help support the Flood Relief effort in Olive Hill. • Wednesday May 19, 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. • Every Saturday in June from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  That’s June 5,12,19 and 26.

 

May 20 - The Carter County Skateboarding Association skaters and parents will meet Thursday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Church of Christ Family Life Center.  Skaters will participate in the Annual Grayson Memory Day’s Parade on Saturday, May 29.  www.cartercountykyskaters.com



May 21: The Carter County Senior Citizens' Center is now accepting donations for it's annual Spring Yard Sale. Items may be donated daily, 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. through May 21. No furniture will be accepted. All proceeds will go to the seniors' activity fund. For more information call 474.4179.



May 22: All God's Children - Faith Based Training on “Keeping Our Kids Safe” will be held Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at First Christian Church, 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland. Registration is free and a free gift will be given tot he first 40 churches/organizations that register. Child care will be provided for children 12 and under – must be pre-registered. This training is for pastors, youth ministers, teachers, preschool staff, program directors and other church staff along with youth groups, parents and church volunteers. The keynote speaker will be KY General Attorney Office Representative Nicole Pang, speaking on “Internet Safety”. Break-out sessions will include: “Let's Talk: Kids and Substance Abuse – Pathways, Inc. Ronne Nunley; “Safe Sanctuaries: Keeping Children Safe in Church” - First United Methodist South Shore Rev. Tami Coleman; “Child Abuse and Neglect: Identification and Reporting – DCBS Deidre Buskirk, MSW; “Dating Safety” - Safe Harbor Debra Wright. May 23: The Olive Hill Masonic Lodge #629 Fun Horse Show will be held May 23, 1 p.m. at the Carter County Shrine Club showgrounds in Olive Hill. The show is sponsored by First National Bank of Grayson. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted will proceeds to benefit the lodge. For more information call 286.8825 or 286.6881.



May 28-29: Happy Trails Saddle Club will sponsor a horse show May 28 and 29, 6 p.m. at the Happy Trails showgrounds on U.S. 60, east of Grayson. These annual shows take place during the Grayson Memory Days celebration. For more information, call 474.8446 or 316.9034.



May 28 - 30: Members of the Holy Roller Motorcycle Ministry have planned a bike rally for May 28 - 30, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Old Time Machinery Show Grounds, off Rt. 7 toward Grayson Lake. Admission is $10 for the weekend. Camping sites are available for $10 per night. There will be bike games, Cornhole tournament, vendors, prizes given throughout the weekend, concessions, Southern Steel Tattoos and more. Music will be provided Friday night by No One Is Upright, Faded and Pacific Heights. Saturday's music will be New Life, Travis Pratt, Band of Brothers, Revinna, Sons of Thunder and Point of Origin. A sunday morning church services will be provided at 10:20 a.m. and will be free to the public. Hamming It Up for Carter County Cares bike ride will begin at 1 p.m. with an entry fee. May 29: The Annual Memory Days Parade is set for Saturday, May 29, 1 p.m. Entries will be accepted through May 27, 4 p.m. Call 474-9522 for more information.  



May 29: The Annual Prichard High School Alumni Banquet will be held Saturday, May 29 at the Grayson Conference Center. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $24 each and reservations need to be made by Friday, May 14. June 18: The Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a golf scramble at Hidden Cove Golf Course at Grayson Lake State Park on Friday, June 18. July 2: Lincoln Theinert with Carter County Thunder, Inc. has announced that Andy Griggs will be the headline performer for Carter County Thunder 2010 scheduled for Friday, July 2, at the Carter County Fairgrounds. The Webbville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is accepting applications for volunteers every Tuesday, 7 - 9 p.m.



There is a country music show each Saturday night, 8 – 11 p.m. at Fort Falls, 106 Carter Caves Road, Olive Hill, featuring the Fort Falls house band. They offer good snack food all night, a nice dance floor and half-half drawing. There is a small charge at the door. For more information, call Anita Kitchen at 286.8485. Everyone is welcome.

Lifeline support classes for those with substance abuse issues are begin held on Monday and Thursday evenings, 6 p.m. at The Shelter House, behind Grayson Free Will Baptist Church, 1778 US 60 E. West Carter High School FFA plant sales are underway. A wide selection of vegetables, bedding plants, flowers, and hanging baskets are available. Sales will be at the school Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on May 8, 9 a.m. - 1p.m. For more information call 286.2481.
