Sept. 1, 2010 — • Sept. 1: The Carter County Retired Teacher’s Association will meet Sept, 1, at the Carter Caves State Park Lodge. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Members are encouraged to attend. Retirees that are non-members and new retirees are welcome to join us.



• Sept 3: THe NWTF committe members will be at Papa Johns Friday, Sept. 3, 5 - 8 p.m. PaPa Johns is donating a percentage of sales for that day to help with Jakes Day. Members will also be selling tickets on a gun raffle for the Wheelin Sportsman Hunt in Oct. The gun will be on display. Everyone is invited to come out and help support the NWTF. Jakes Day is Sept. 18 at Camp Webb.



• Sept. 3 – 6: Mike Johnston has announced that the Carter County Clerk's office will be closed due to a state mandated furlough Friday, Sept. 3 – Monday, Sept. 6. The office will re-open on Tuesday, Sept. 7.



• Sept. 3-5: Labor Day Getaway Close out the summer with lots of family fun at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park.  There will be crafts, hayrides, a scavenger hunt, mini golf and all sorts of fun-filled activities to keep you busy.  Don’t forget the community pool will be open through Sept. 6, so come out and enjoy that last swim of the summer. 800-325-0083.



• Sept. 4: Barker Family reunion. The Barker Family reunion is set for Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Bruin Shelter along Rt. 7 at the Elliott County line at Grayson Lake State Park across from the campgrounds. Please plane to come. Bring a covered dish and/or drinks. Everyone is welcome.



• Sept. 4: Wallace Cousin’s Family Reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 4th, at the Hitchins Community Center. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. All are invited to bring a favorite dish and come out for a day of good food and fellowship. For more information contact Dorthy Rae Barker, at 606.286.2407.



• Sept. 4: The Genealogy Workshops have been a great success. The next workshop on preparing displays will be September 4th from 1:00-3:00. Toddler Time was a hit. The kids and parents had a blast and we are looking forward to more fun times with the toddlers. To see pictures, visit our NEW FACEBOOK PAGE. Don't forget to "like" us. We enjoyed the visit from Sylvia Davis and look forward to her coming back. We had a great turn out for her reading. Gwen Mayo will be in the Library Saturday August 28th from 12:00-3:00 come and join us. • Sept. 4: The Stinson School Reunion will take place Sept. 4 at the Grayson Senior Citizens Center on Second Street in Grayson. The doors will open at 10:30 a.m. and dinner will be served at noon. Sept. 5: The annual reunion of the descendants of John L. and Mary Elizabeth Parsons Carroll is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 5. The reunion will be held at Rattlesnake Ridge Community Center. All family members and friends of the Carroll Family are invited to attend and bring a covered dish, dessert or soft drinks for lunch. Lunch will be around 12:30 – 1 p.m. For more information call 286-5788.



• Sept. 5: Descendants of Lafayette and Victoria Lee Everman will be gathering for their annual reunion at Armco Park, Shelter #3 on Sunday, Sept. 5. All family and friends are encouraged to attend. A potluck dinner will be at noon.



• Sept. 5: Family and friends of Charles and Ruth Yates will meet at the Bruin Shelter of Grayson Lake on Sept. 5, 1 p.m. This shelter is located near the Bruin Bridge on Route 7 just passed the Elliott County Line. Bring a covered dish, dessert, and your drinks and join us for lunch!



Sept. 5: R. J. and Lillie Keaton Carroll, and Hubert and Audrey Burnett Family and Friends Reunion, Sept 5, at 1 p.m. at the Lowell and Garnet Messer’s Home, 1094 Zornes Branch Grayson, located on Rt. 7 & 2 below Carter City. For more information call 606.474.4147.



Sept. 5: The Annual Berry Reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 5 at 385 Berry Hollow in Denton. Family and friends are welcome to attend and bring a covered dish.



Sept. 5: All friends and relatives are invited to attend the 36th Annual Dean and Creech Reunion on Sept. 5, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Carl Perkins Community Center in Morehead. This reunion is for descendants of James Hm Dean and Nancy Fields Dean of Carter County and David and Anna Brinegar Mocabee of Carter County. There will be a display area for those desiring to bring items to share with each other. A photographer will be available to take group pictures during the day. Sept. 5: Oney Family Reunion will be Sunday, Sept. 5, noon, at Grayson Lake State Park Shelter #2. Everyone is welcome to come for dinner, fun and games. Please bring a covered dish. For more information, call 286.8106



Sept. 6: The family of the late Thomas King will hold their annual reunion at the Carl Perkins Center in Morehead on Monday, Sept. 6, Labor Day. All are invited to enjoy the day with family and friends and bring a covered dish. Lunch will be at noon.



Sept. 6: The Olive Hill Code Enforcement Board will meet on Monday, Sept. 6, 7 p.m. at the fire station at 395 Tygart Street, Olive Hill.



• Sept. 6: Carter Caves State Resort Park, Olive Hill Pickin’ at the Caves Bring your instruments out to Carter Caves State Resort Park to gather and play music with other local musicians. Don’t play? No problem! Come and enjoy the tunes that local talent has to offer. The pickin’ will be in and around the lobby of Lewis Caveland Lodge from 7-9 p.m. Visit early and enjoy a country meal in the Tierney’s Cavern Restaurant. This event is held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. 800-325-0059.



• Sept. 7: A Veterans Benefits Field Representative will be at the Carter County Courthouse in Grayson on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. - noon. This change from the typical first Monday of the month is due to the Labor Day Holiday. Veterans and their dependents will receive assistance filing for Federal and State veterans benefits. This service is provided free of charge by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. To apply, veterans need to furnish copies of pertinent documentation to verify eligibility. For further information, call toll free 1.866.244.8970 to speak with a Veterans Benefits Field Representative.



• Sept. 8: The FIVCO Long Term Ombudsman Advisory Council will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2 p.m. in the meeting room of the Boyd County Library, 1740 Central Ave., Ashland. • Sept. 9: Carter County Farm Bureau will host it's annual election of officers and directors Thursday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m. in the farm bureau meeting room, located at 127 S. Hord Street, Grayson.



• Sept. 10 – 11: Greenbo Lake State Resort Park will hold its Camper Trade Days Sept. 10-11, 2010. Come and enjoy the September weather and sell those unwanted collectables. Clean out your attics, basements, garages and even that mystery closet. Bring anything you want to get rid of (suitable for public viewing), or handcrafts that you want to sell. You must be in a camping site to set up a trading or selling area. No food, drinks or firearms may be sold. There will be a free bean dinner for campers on Friday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The campground will be open to the public for the sale on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 800-325-0083 for more information.



• Sept. 11: Carter County Shrine second annual Jammin At the Park Pig Roast is set for Saturday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.  The cost is $20 to enjoy music and food. Anyone wanting to bring instruments and join in are welcome. For more information call Chris Binion at 286.1805.



• Sept. 11: Meet and Ride Tractor Drive is scheduled for Sept. 11. Those participating will meet at the Chicken Coop on the AA Highway, 11 miles from Grayson and 16 miles from Vanceburg. The tractors will pull out at 10 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. There will be a stop for lunch with good food and yummy ice cream cones at the Quik Stop on Rt.7.  All are invited to come and join in the fun and bring family and friends. This is a nonprofit, free, family-fun day. Past participants have brought a wagon full of family members to go with them. Some even have four to five generations on one wagon. • Sept. 13: The Carter County Republican Women will meet Monday, Sept. 13, 6 p.m. in the meeting room at Shoney's Restaurant in Grayson. • Sept. 13: The Olive Hill Planning and Zoning Committee will meet in regular session, Monday, Sept. 13th, at the restored Olive Hill High School, 120 Comet Drive, Olive Hill, starting at 7 p.m.



• Sept 14: St. Claire Regional will host a Diabetes Support Group with a free educational presentation, Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at 6 p.m., in Café D-located on the second floor of the medical center. This month’s focus is “Portion Distortion”. Foods that contain carbohydrates raise blood glucose and by learning how to track them individuals can better manage their diabetes. Participants will learn how to set their maximum carbohydrate intake and how to calculate the carbohydrate content of foods they eat. The support group is free to the community and open to anyone with diabetes and their family or caregivers. For more information, call 606-783-6702.



• Sept. 14: The Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce will meet on September 14 at noon at Shoney’s Restaurant with speaker Superintendent Darlene Gee addressing the group. Visit the chamber's website at www.graysonchamber.org for all the latest chamber events and become a member to support the local community. The Chamber and Carter County CARES continues to organize Funtober Fest for Saturday, October 2 with festivities beginning at 9 a.m. parade at 2 p.m. and concluding with Carter County Corn Maze from 5-8 p.m. Events are scheduled on the webpage at www.graysonchamber.org



• Sept. 18: The Hitchins Post will present Hitchins Fest, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. There will be live Bluegrass music with Dave Carroll and New River Line, Jonathan Buckner and Chosen Road, Pactolus Pony Riders, Chain Reaction, Dustin Burchett and Born Country and The Zack Bentley Show. And it’s all for the best price in the country – Free! Concessions will be sold.



• Sept. 18: West Carter High School Girls Soccer Team fundraiser is set for Sept, 18th, at 6 p.m. There will be a soup bean dinner, along with an auction in the West Carter High School Cafeteria. Menu includes soup beans, corn bread, kraut, fried potatoes, dessert and drink, all for $6. Tickets are being sold in advance and at the door.



• Sept. 18: Descendants of Isaac D. and Henrietta Stamper will have a family reunion at noon, September 18th, at Bruin, Grayson Lake. Everyone is urged to bring a covered dish and family information to share.



• Sept. 18: Jakes Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at Camp Webb at Grayson Lake State Park.



• Sept. 24: Parents of Murdered Children will celebrate the National Day of Remembrance at Grayson City Park on Friday, Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m.



• Sept. 25: Carter County GED Graduation will be Saturday, September 25th at noon at the Industrial Parkway Technology Drive Campus, “Rocky Adkins Pavilion”. We invite the community to join us in celebrating the many hours of hard work and accomplishments of our 2010 graduates. Expected graduates should RSVP by September 10th at 286-0137.



• Sept. 25: Webbville Volunteer Fire Dept. will hold a poker run Saturday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m. at the fire department. The cost is $15 per bike and $5 for each additional rider. Prizes will be awarded. For more information, call 606.652.9614 or 606.367.2830.



• Oct. 1 & 2: The Olive Hill High School Alumni and Friends Association will be having their third annual reunion on Oct.1 and 2. Letters have been sent. If you do not receive your letter or know of someone who didn't and would want to be on the mailing list, please contact Rose Ann Raybourn Perkins--606-286 -5346.  Reservations must be made by September 20th.



• Oct. 2: Carter County CARES is organizing the 8th Annual Grayson Funtober Fest set for Saturday, October 2. This year’s theme will be “STOP CHILDHOOD HUNGER” Events that have been confirmed so far are the Rotary Pancake Breakfast, Balloon Creatures, Pumpkin Painting Contest, KDMC Health Screenings, Chili contest, Merchants specials with prizes, costume parade, pet costume contest, Carter County Corn Maze, Handcraft Fair,  fall photos, motorcycle show, pie contest, gift bags as well as others being planned. • Oct. 2: The Carter County Shrine Club will hold their Cruise-In Saturday, Oct. 2, 5 - 9 p.m. at the showgrounds in Olive Hill. The Top 5 and Best of Show will be awarded. There will be door prizes, activities for  the kids, music and games. Donations will be accepted but there is no registration fee. For more information, call 316.2323 or 316.2192.



• Oct. 11: Homemaker Week. Carter County Extension Homemaker Week will be Oct. 11 to 15. Please be thinking of ideas to promote your organization throughout Carter County.



• Oct. 21: The Paramount Arts Center and Greenbo Lake State Resort Park through the Big Read program will be producing a dinner theatre featuring Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park’s conference facilities, Thursday, October 21, 2010 starting at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will include a choice of prime rib or grilled salmon, chef’s special soup, fresh Kentucky Proud produce salad, two chef’s special vegetables, one of our tasty desserts and a drink (ice tea or Pepsi beverage), which will be served as a course at the beginning and during each intermission of the play. We have a package that includes lodging, dinner and the show for two at $136 (which includes a free continental breakfast) and the dinner and show tickets are $35 per person. • Oct. 28: Halloween Trick or Treat in Grayson will be Thursday, Oct. 28, 6 - 8 p.m.



• The Grayson Tourism Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at the log cabin, which is located in the city park at 6 p.m. The Tourism Commission is seeking an energetic and committed person who is willing to take on a challenge and become a tourism member. If you are interested in becoming a member of the tourism commission or just want to volunteer, please contact the Grayson Tourism and Convention Commission at 474.8740 or Tourism Chairman Don Cooke at 474.9285. Members of the commission represent the hotel/motel and restaurant businesses in Grayson as well as the Grayson Chamber of Commerce and members who wish to help bring tourists to Carter County.
