April 27 – 29: The East side/Grayson area cleanup will be April 27 – 29, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Dumpsters will be located at Norton Branch Fire Department, Grayson Maintenance lot, Hitchins Old 773 and Pleasant Hill.
April 30: Idletymes will be performing Friday, April 30, 7 p.m. at the Isaacs Performing Arts Center (old Hitchins School). Admission will be $10. Concessions will be sold. All proceeds will go to the Hitchins Preservation Society.
April 30 - May 17: The absentee voting machine will be open for voters who qualify starting April 30, 10 a.m. - May 17, 4 p.m. Carter County Clerk office hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Tuesday - 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - noon.

May 1: The 1st Annual Children's Miracle Network Charity Ride will be held Saturday, May 1. There will be prizes at every stop. Cost is $15 per bike and $5 per additional rider. The trip will leave from the Olive Hill Fire Department at 12:30 p.m. and travel through Carter, Elliott and Rowan Counties. In case of rain, the ride will be held on May 8. May 1: The Rt. 504 Volunteer Fire Department will have their annual Spring Fish Fry with a cake and pie auction on Saturday, May 1. The fish fry will be from 1 – 4 p.m. with the auction around 4 p.m. The meal will consist of fish, chicken, potato wedges, hushpuppies, cole slaw, a drink and dessert. It will cost $6 for adults, $3 for children 4-12, and children under three eat free. Political candidates will be given a time slot to speak starting around 3 p.m. with a special pie auction. Only those candidates running for that particular office may bid on that particular pie. There will also be live music. Everyone welcome to come and support the fire department.
May 1: Old Time Machinery & Antique Association 2010 scholarship applications for high school seniors are available at East & West Carter High Schools. You can pick up one in your counselors office at the schools. Deadline for the applications to be mailed in is Saturday, May 1.

May 1: Join the US Army Corps of Engineers at Grayson Lake on Saturday, May 1, to celebrate Arbor Day 2010. Activities will start at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Those participating will be planting trees around the project to improve wildlife habitat and beautify the park. Meet at the Corps of Engineers office at 9 a.m.
May 1: A donkey basketball show will be held at the West Carter High School gym on Saturday, May 1, 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. They can be purchased at West Carter High School. Net proceeds will go to Relay for Life.
May 2: The 11th Annual Elliott County Shrine Spring Fun Horse Show will be held May 2 at the Shrine Park in Sandy Hook, located a half mile out of Sandy Hook on Rt. 556. May 4: Legal Aid of the Bluegrass' FIVCO State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), a non-profit organization, has been giving a helping hand to people with Medicare in navigating the healthcare maze for many years. The focus of the FIVCO SHIP Program is to educate and assist Medicare beneficiaries and the elderly in making informed decisions regarding benefits based on their circumstances and needs. The program is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with its mission. The FIVCO SHIP Program will be conducting a volunteer training on May 4. May 8: A benefit will be held at Happy Trails Campgrounds on Cribbs Hill in Grayson May 8, for Phillip and Patricia Wilson, a family who lost everything in a house fire. May 8: ENOUGH has a big day is planned for Saturday, May 8, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Old Time Machinery Showgrounds, off Rt. 7, toward Grayson Lake State Park. All candidates are encouraged to attend and each will be given three minutes to present their platform. Each candidate is asked to furnish a pie or cake, which will be auctioned off after the speeches. Meals on Wheels will provide food and drinks with proceeds going to help feed the hungry. All other proceeds from the above two events will go to ENOUGH Inc. to aid in Drug Awareness, Prevention, and Rehabilitation in Carter County including Lifeline of Carter County and Teen Challenge of KY. May 28-30: Members of the Holy Roller Motorcycle Ministry have planned a bike rally for May 28 - 30, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Old Time Machinery Show Grounds, off Rt. 7 toward Grayson Lake. The Grayson Branch of Basket of Hope began its Annual Toy Drive in area churches on Easter Sunday and will continue through the month of April. Collection containers are located in area churches and also in 'My Second Home' on Main Street in Grayson. Board games and Barbie dolls are currently being collected for baskets. It is again time to mow and clean the old Counts Cemetery at Leon. A grant has been received from the state to clean and put a fence around it the first year. Mowing season began April 3 for Vanhoose Cemetery. Frees are $20 per plot. This will be the last mowing season we will do upkeep on the entire cemetery unless back fess are caught up and more families start paying for the upkeep, said Teresa McRoberts.
