Carol B. Sparks Lewis Boyd,
1947 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Carol B. Sparks Lewis Boyd, 62, of Andrew Boyd Lane, Morehead, Ky, went home to be with God, her Savior, on Wed, Nov.18, 2009, after her second brave battle with breast cancer.
She was born August 8, 1947, on Buffalo in Haldeman, Kentucky, to Bert Edison Sparks and Virginia Mayme Cox.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 30 years, Andrew Wesley Boyd, whom she married on March 9, 1979; her step father, Bernard Lewis; her sisters, Mayflower Sparks, Loveadean Sparks, Geraldine Lewis; her brother, Lacy Carl Lewis, Sr.; her step daughter, Andrea Kay Boyd Myers McGaha Peek; her step son, Wesley Eugene Boyd; and her step grandsons, Jason Eli Hartsook; and step great grandsons, twins Tristen Lee and Caleb Lee Wallace.
She leave to mourn her passing her daughter Vicki Lynn Boyd Thurman Scales Ingle of Morehead, her step children: son-in-law, Robert Linzie Peek of Celina, Tennessee, JoAnn Len Boyd Mitchell White and her husband Kenny of Maysville, Kentucky, daughter-in-law, Carolyn Bentley Boyd of Morehead, Ky, Donna Andrea Boyd Tackett, Michael Shadrach Boyd and his wife Nancy Kidd Boyd of Richmond, Ky, Phillip Wayne Boyd and his wife Tonya Tredway Boyd of Jeffersonville, Ky, Tammy Lea Boyd and her significant other, Willard Pinkerman of Morehead, Kentucky, Timothy Andrew Boyd, Sr. and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Pence Boyd of Morehead.
She also leaves 24 step grandchildren, 37 step great grandchildren, and three step great-great grandchildren. She also leaves her brothers and sisters: Delmus and Mary Lewis, James and Joyce Lewis both of Ohio, Lester Lee Lewis of Morehead, Kentucky, Stella May Lewis Barricks and her husband Bennie Gerald Barricks, Donnie Gene and wife Marilyn Lewis of Indiana, Aileen Lewis Calton and her husband Roy Calton, and her sister-in-law, Nancy Calton Lewis, all of Morehead, Kentucky; and her step father, Daniel Bender of West Liberty, Kentucky.
Carol worked for 40 years in the sewing factories of Cowden’s, Big Yank, Austin Apparel, Carhartt, and Bath Manufacturing. She drove a cab for White Top Taxi, Veteran’s Taxi, and Boyd’s Taxi; she worked in the mushroom mines of Lawton in Carter County. She finished her public working career at Nestle in Mount Sterling and Emerson Power Transmission known as Seal Master Bearing in Morehead, Kentucky.
Charlotte Gregory Donahue
1939 – 2009
GRAYSON – Charlotte Gregory Donahue, 70, of Dry Creek Road, Clearfield, passed away Sun. Nov. 22, at her residence.
Born June 3, 1939, in Rowan County. she was the daughter of the late Corbett and Gladys Brown Gregory. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nettie Adkins and Dorothy Law, and two brothers, Elvia Gregory and her twin, Charles Gregory.
Charlotte is survived by her husband of 51 years, Winford Donahue; one daughter, Elaine Littleton and husband Rick of Clearfield, Kentucky; one grandson, Jason Littleton and his wife Kristen; two great grandsons, Tanner Mason and Bennett Littleton; and several nieces and nephews.
Charlotte retired from Imperial Cleaners where she worked for 15 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending time with her family. Charlotte’s dog Lily was also special to her.
Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Nov. 25, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Carlos Bowman officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Jason Littleton, Rick Littleton, Tanner Mason, Larry Law, David Phillips, Richard Phillips, Audrey Staton, and Roger Mason.
Honorary pallbearers were Willie Wagoner and Wayne Stevens.
Vernon Leroy Stewart
1932 – 2009
ASHLAND – Vernon Leroy Stewart of Savannah, GA, formerly of Ashland, died Nov. 16, in Savannah, Ga. following a long illness. He was born Sept. 3, 1932 at Denton, a son of Herbert Sergent and Herma Stewart.
He was a retired truck driver and former owner of Stewart’s Market and Service Station in Summitt. He was also an Elder at Princess Church of Christ and several other christian churches in the Ashland area.
He was also a Ky. Colonel, a constant visitor to the sick and shut-in, loved horses and sailing with his brother-in-law, Howard Smith. He believed in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s which affected his wife.
In his later years he was a tireless fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association and was instrumental in making the Savannah Chapter the leading donor in the State of GA.
After coming to Savannah he became a vital part of his daughter's Avon Team of almost 400 representatives and over 300 customers, sharing his wisdom with all the importance of building relationships and providing excellent customer service. A true asset to her national business.
He is survived by his wife, Eula Jean Moore Stewart of Savannah, GA. one daughter, Margie Stewart Robichaux of Savannah, Ga. 2 grandchildren, Tony and Casey Robichaux; three half brothers, Charles Kozee of Chillicothe, Ohio, Darrell Pinkerton of Waverly, Ohio and Don Sergent of Grayson, one half sister; Rose Kidder of West Union, 2 grandchildren,Tony and Casey Robichaux.
Funeral services were held Sat. Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home with Henry Glancy, minister.
Burial was in the East Carter Co. Memory Gardens
Donna Jean Hatton Smedley
1962 – 2009
CLEARFIELD – Donna Jean Hatton Smedley, 47, of Dry Creek Road, Clearfield, Ky, wife of Michael L. Smedley, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at her home following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Born Jan. 27, 1962, in Carlisle, she was the daughter of the late John E. Hatton and Margaret Willoughby Hatton Moore, now of Bethel, Ky.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are four children, including three daughters, Krista Smedley of the U. S. Marine Corps, Hawaii, and Whitley and Ashley Smedley, at home; one son, C. J. Smedley, also at home; three sisters, Elizabeth Hatton of Bethel, Kentucky, Joyce Patton of Buzzard’s Roost, Ky, and Rita Hunt of Owingsville, Ky; and two brothers, Paul Hatton of Bethel, Kentucky, and Everette Hatton of Mt. Sterling. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Douglas Hatton.
A graduate of Morehead State University, she was a former teacher who became a full-time homemaker and mother who home-schooled her children. She worked several years at Roses Department Store in Morehead and loved to travel and work in her garden.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was a former president of the Owingsville Ward Primary. She and her husband were married July 3, 1993, in Clearfield.
Funeral services was conducted Tue. Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Owingsville Ward on KY 36, one-half mile east of Exit 121 of I-64, with Bishop Ted Marshall officiating. Burial followed in the Smedley Family Cemetery on Dry Creek Road in Clearfield.
Pallbearers were Larry Moore, Brandon Riley, Everette Hatton, C. J. Smedley, Robert Thomas, James Barber, Steve McKinney, and Krista Smedley.
Snowy Brooke Hall
1991 – 2009
GRAYSON – Snowy Brooke Hall, 18, passed away on Nov. 23, in the blink of an eye was carried by Angels to dwell in the House of the Lord Forever. She was born Sept. 19,1991 at Morehead.
This wonderful and beautiful girl is the daughter of Johnny Lee and Cloma Jean Elliott Hall of Grayson.
She is survived by: her brother, Johnny Gene Hall, sister-in-law, Christa Gearhart of Ashland; brother, Michael Lee Hall of Grayson; sister, Kristy Dawn Thompson, brother-in-law, Jeremy Thompson, nephew, Austin Thompson, niece, Alexis Thompson all of Grayson; her grandparents, Lowell and Jewell Elliott of Grayson; her closest aunts and uncles, Loretta and Ernie Hall of Hitchins, Lowell and Angel Elliott of Grayson, Joe Hall and Florence Fryer of Ashland; her closest cousins, Tabitha Stewart, Rebecca Hall, Kyle McCowen, Trey and Quincy Elliott, Keelee and Isabelle Stewart and many other family members near and far; her beloved boyfriend, David Guilds and his family, Peggy, Doug, Dillon and Morgan Guilds of Willard; her closest friends, Shelby Mullins, Megan Horton, Ashley Boyles and hundreds of others.
Preceded in death by her grandfather, Henry Hall, great-grandparents, Otto and Belle Steele and Sylvia Sparks.
Snowy is a member of the Iron Hill Missionary Baptist Church and attended college in Ashland.
Her goal was to be a Registered Nurse. She had already accomplished being a State Registered Nursing Assistant and was working at Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson. She dearly loved her family, friends and her job taking care of people. She had the care and compassion to have made a wonderful nurse.
There just are no words for how much we love and miss her. To our greatest sorrow, God only allowed us the joy of having her with us a very short 18 years.
Funeral Services were conducted Sat. Nov. 28, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, with Lowell Elliott, Eddie Barker and David Guilds. Burial was in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Leah Armitage Ramey
1924 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Leah Armitage Ramey, 85, formerly of Pleasant Valley, passed away Nov. 21, at the Life Care Center of Morehead.
She was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Menifee County, and was the daughter of the late Carl and Ocie Spencer Armitage.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Craig Baldridge; three brothers, Woodford, Donald and Stanley Armitage; and one sister, Maxine Byrd.
She is survived by her husband, Hobert Ramey, whom she married Nov. 8, 1945; three daughters: Karen Collins, Rosemary Jones, Erna Gay Wells and husband Bob; and one son: Gilbert Ramey, all of Morehead. five grandchildren: Michael and Paul Ramey, Kimberly Collins, Karla Lambert and Kari Mauk; and five great grandchildren: Laken and Chase Ramey, Karli Baldridge, Kevin and Trinity Lambert.
Surviving are one sister, Roma Crouch of Clearfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ramey was a homemaker, mother, and former employee of Cowden’s Mfg., where she worked for 17 years. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and cooking.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Nov. 24, at Northcutt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. David Starcher, Bro. Brad Bennington, and Bro. Kenny Fouch officiating.
Burial followed in Brown Cemetery. Family and friends served as pallbearers.
Herbert Henderson
1932 – 2009
OLIVE HILL – Herbert Henderson, 77, of Galion, died Nov. 25, at his home.
Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Olive Hill, he was the son of Ulyses Allan and Rebecca (Hall) Henderson.
Herb was formerly employed as a supervisor at General Motors. He was a member of Lincoln Heights Baptist Church. In his spare time, Herb enjoyed woodworking, computers and during his younger years, hunting. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him great joy. He was a very loving and giving man.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Naomi (Carroll) Henderson; two sons, Gilbert (Susie) Friday of Mansfield and John R. (Lori) Henderson of Dayton; two stepsons, Clifford “Michael” Qualls of Big Spring, Texas and Charles (Cinde) Qualls of Galion; two stepdaughters, Rhonda (Kevin) Conrad of Iberia and Kathy Qualls of La Porte, Texas; five grandchildren, Ashley Henderson, Adam, Ben, and Abbie Friday and Kellie Henderson; eight step grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren, including three special great grandsons, Daniel O’Neal, Jacob Conrad, and Hunter Sharp; two sisters, Linda Mona Butler of Union and Cledith (Albert) McCleese of Olive Hill, two brothers, Fred (Tressie) Henderson of Shelby and Ernest (Ruth) Henderson of Phoenix, Ariz. and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Thomas M. Henderson; stepson, James A. Qualls; a sister, Thelma May Rice; and three brothers, Artist, Willie Allen and Ollie Avery Henderson.
Funeral services were held at Wappner Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Hildreth C. (Hillie) McKee
1924 – 2009
HILLSBORO – Hildreth C. (Hillie) McKee, 85, of Sunset Road, Hillsboro, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Born July 8, 1924, in Fleming County, he was the son of the late Amos and Augusta Sproles McKee.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anna Stephens McKee, whom he married August 9, 1954; one son, Scottie McKee and his wife Jill of Hillsboro, Ky; one daughter, Linda Williams and her husband Don of Owingsville, Ky; and six grandchildren, Erika Hunt, Joe Hunt, Austin McKee, Cole McKee, Bailey McKee, and Braydon McKee. Also surviving are one brother, Woodie McKee of Poplar Plains, Ky, and one sister, Gracie Arnold of Flemingsburg, and his favorite dog, Aggie.Mr. McKee served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the Randall Company in Flemingsburg where he worked in the buffing room for 26 years. He was also a farmer and carpenter and attended the Methodist Church.
Funeral services was conducted 2 p.m. Tues, Nov. 24, at the Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro with the Rev. Lowell Rice and Bro. Gerald Saunders officiating.
Burial followed in the Hillsboro Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Flemingsburg Franklin Sousley VFW Post 1834 and American Legion Post No. 5.
Pallbearers were Robert Harmon, Donnie Harmon, Calvin Donaldson, Roy Pugh, Bill Story, Marion Story, Stevie Call, and Mike Hawkins.
Honorary pallbearers were Dave McKee, Pete Waggoner, Bill Conway, and Jewell Call.
Charles “Charlie” Donathan
1965 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Charles “Charlie” Donathan, 44, of Moores Flat Road, Morehead, passed away Nov. 24, at the U.K. Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.
He was born May 12, 1965, in Montgomery County, and is the son of Charles Edward Donathan and Gennive Brown White and husband Deward of Clearfield.
He is also survived by his wife, Tracy Arnett Donathan; two sons, Steven and Silas Donathan; and two daughters, Allison and Amber Arnett, all at home.
Other survivors include two brothers, Danny Donathan of Montgomery County, and Jimmy Donathan, of Morehead, five sisters, Patricia Donathan and Sally White, both of Clearfield, Pam Christy, Shelley Green, and Bobbie Withrow, all of Morehead, and his mother- and father-in-law, Paul and Lori Reynolds Arnett of Morehead.
Charlie was an employee of the W. Rogers Company in Lexington, Ky, and a member of the Salt Lick Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral services were Nov. 28, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Andy Lands and Todd Layne officiating. Burial followed in the Carey Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Bowling, Bob Harris, Hootie Montgomery, Kyle Arnett, Roy Lands, Aaron McGafflin, and Billy Rose.
Honorary pallbearers were Ron Montgomery and Curly Montgomery.
Jesse William Littleton
1944 – 2009
OLIVE HILL – Jesse William Littleton, 65, of Grahn Road, Olive Hill, passed away, Nov. 24, at his residence.
He was born June 7, 1944, in Lewis County, a son of the late James "Jim" and Clemis Stevens Littleton.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers; Clifford Littleton and Millard Littleton; one sister; Lou Littleton.
Mr. Littleton was self employed Owner and Operator of Littleton Trucking for thirty years. His hobbie was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of forty-one years whom he married on Aug.11,1968, Patricia Darlene Kitchen Littleton; two daughters and sons in-law; Patricia Gale and Rick Edwards of Anniston Alabama; Roxana and David Prater of Flemingsburg, Ky; seven grandchildren; Alicia Cox, Jesse Cox, Leigh Ann Cox, Stephanie Cox, Kristina Cox, Andy Prater and Carson Prater; one great granddaughter; Madison Davis; one brother and sister- in-law; James and Betty Littleton of Mansfield, Ohio.
He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.
Funeral services were Nov. 28, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother David Prater officiating.
Burial followed in the Kiser - McGinnis Cemetery at Iron Hill in Grayson.
Duane “Danny” David Campbell
1944 – 2009
HITCHINS – Duane “Danny” David Campbell passed away Nov. 25, at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Jan. 16, 1944 at Hitchins, a son of the late Woodrow and June Carroll Campbell. He was retired from Laborers Local #1145 in Catlettsburg, was an avid CB’er (who was known as Fishhook) and was of the Protestant Faith.
His survivors include: His wife, Mary Pennington Campbell of Hitchins; one daughter, Jennifer (and husband Ova) Sexton of Hitchins; one son, Jason Campbell of Hitchins; two sisters, Joy Kennedy of Hitchins and Deborah Carper of Carter City, five brothers, Gene Campbell of Hitchins, Glen Campbell of Hitchins, Darrell Campbell of Denton, Paul Campbell of Salt Lick, W.Va. and Terry Campbell of Hitchins; four grandchildren, Haley Sexton, Chelsey Sexton, David Sexton and Austin Campbell and special friend, Wilbur Baugess.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m, at the Malone Funeral Home, with Kyle Burchett and Roger Nolty officiating. Burial was in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Mary Lucy Crawford Womack
1916 – 2009
GRAYSON – Mary Lucy Womack, 93 of Grayson died Nov. 24, She was born Oct.11, 1916 in Grayson, a daughter of the late W.V. and Mary Nipp Crawford.
She was a housewife , mother, and a member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson.
Mary was a graduate of the Christian Normal Institute (CNI) and attended Morehead State University.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Womack, a sister Billie Alice Buck and a brother, Woodrow Crawford.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Lynn (Karen) Womack of Louisville, two daughters, Lesley Elam and Rebecca (Dalis) Burchett both of Grayson. Grandchildren; Courtney and Kristen Elam, Brooke (Jeff) Rice, Sarah Griffith, Andrew and Amelia Womack. Great-grandchildren, Cameron and Ian Rice.
Funeral services were Nov. 6, at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Tim Nischan, minister. Burial followed at the Grayson Memorial Park.
