1943-2011


    Johnny Lee Baker, 68, of Wauchula, Fla., formerly of Grayson passed away July 23, 2011 in Avon Park, Fla.

    He was born May 12, 1943 at Hitchins, the son of John and Bessie Baker. Johnny attended schools in Berea, Hitchins and Grayson.

    He joined the United States Navy in December 1961 retiring from the Navy on Jan. 1, 1982. He is the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and various ribbons and medals.

    Johnny spent many years in service and leadership with the Boys Scouts of America. He was a member of the Charlie Creek Baptist Church in Wauchula, Fla. He was in attendance in Grayson Memorial Methodist Church when he resided in Grayson.

    Johnny was a loving husband, father and brother who will be sorely missed.

    Johnny is survived by his wife, Patricia Baker; his mother, Bessie Baker; four children, John Kenneth Baker, Deanna Barnef, David Otis Baker and Brandi Lee Thomas; two sisters, Madonna Kovi and Venus Counts and six grandchildren.

    He is preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Sloan Baker, his father, John T. Baker and two sisters, Rosemary Messemore and Rosemarie Baker.

    A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Bagby Memorial Methodist Church with Susan Elkow and James Bland officiating.

    Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.

    The family will receive friends starting at 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.
