LaTonia Renee Black

1972 – 2010

GRAYSON – LaTonia Renee Black, 37, of Paradise Hill, Grayson, Ky, passed away Feb. 15, at her residence.

Born July 5, 1972, in Rowan County, Ky, she is the daughter of Berlin Black, Jr., of Clearfield, Ky, and Lois Johnson Black of Grayson, Ky.

Other survivors include two sisters, Shanna Black Hamm and husband Jim of Grayson, and Melanie Black Cobb and husband Christopher of Mt. Sterling, Ky, paternal grandmother, Opal Black of Morehead, Ky, and four nieces, Lauren Elizabeth Hamm, Rachel Annelise Hamm, Caroline Abigail Hamm, and Bailey Christian Cobb.

Funeral services were conducted Feb. 20, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Jim Hamm officiating. Burial was in Fultz Cemetery on Christy Creek.



Rodney Lane Clark

1977 – 2010

Tollsboro – Rodney Lane Clark, 32, of Pine Valley Road, Tollsboro, Ky, passed away Feb. 16, at the Meadoview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, Ky.

Mr. Clark was born, Nov. 4, 1977, in Hamilton County, Ohio, a son of the late Norman and Gladys Bloomfield Clark

Rodney was an employee of Garrison Auction House in Garrison, Ky.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Clark, Melton Clark; two sisters, Jennifer Clark and Iris Cress.

Survivors include his wife of three years, Angel Cutlip Clark, three brothers, Norman Franklin Clark and Ursula Duncan of Tollsboro, Ky, William Estill Clark and Brenda Bloomfield of Vanceburg, Ky, Ralph Edward and Lisa Clark of Tollsboro, Kentucky; one sister, Diana Clark and Meryl Horsley of Garrison, Ky.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix, Ky, with Brother Haze Tackett officiating.

Burial followed in the Spy Run Cemetery in Garrison, Ky.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.



Charles Richard “Dick” Tiller

1928-2010

RUSH – Charles Richard “Dick” Tiller 81, of Rush, Died Feb.17, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born June 18, 1928 in Boyd County.

Funeral Services were Feb. 20, at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.



Harlen Junior Davis

1956 – 2010

SANDY HOOK – Harlen Junior Davis, 54, of Sandy Hook, passed away Feb. 16, at the Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born Feb. 1, 1956, in Carter County, Ky, a son of the late Wess Whitt, Jr. and Opal Davis Easton.

He was self employed and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rebecca Ann Easton, Gloria June Easton and Jeanie Davis Johnston, paternal grandparents, Harlen Luther and Clara Davis, maternal grandparents, Wess and Goldie Whitt.

He is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Barbara Lewis Davis, two sons, Luke Davis and Billy Lewis both of Sandy Hook, two special grandsons, Marcus Lee Davis and Lucas Michael Davis both of Sandy Hook, ten brothers, Eddie Easton, Danny Easton, Tony Easton, Bobby Davis, Logan Davis and Tommy Davis all of Morehead, Mike Easton and Leslie Whitt both of Olive Hill, Allen Easton of Kansas City, Missouri and Junior Whitt of Springfield, Ohio, seven sisters, Eugenia Stacy and Marie Whitt both of Morehead, Gloria Wagoner Clearfield, Ky, Clara Thompson of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Crystal Easton of Hillsboro, Ky, Goldie Dennison of Sandy Hook, and Polly Whitt of Springfield, Ohio, his step-father, Eugene Easton of Morehead, Ky.

Along with a host of extended family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held Feb.19, in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, Ky, with Brother Lance Mays and Brother Ricky Lewis officiating.

Burial followed in the Lewis Family Cemetery on Brown Ridge in Elliott County, Ky.

Family and friends served as pallbearers.

Columbus Ivan

Leadingham

1929 – 2010

OLIVE HILL – Columbus Ivan Leadingham, 81, of Olive Hill,passed away Feb.19, at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Leadingham was born, Jan. 31, 1929, in Carter County, Ky, a son of the late Everett Leadingham and Ethel Boggs Leadingham.

Columbus was a retired employee of the Louisville Firebrick Brickyard in Grahn, Ky, where he work fifty plus years as a general laborer. He was a Christian and a veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Michael Leadingham; three sisters, Ola Blankenship, Nadine Bowling and Pearline Pennington, two infant siblings.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Juanita Gulley Leadingham; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Roxann Leadingham, Keith Leadingham, two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Rodney Vanlandingham, Phyllis and Lonnie Sturgill all of Olive Hill, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Michael Leadingham, Scott Leadingham, Chad Vanlandingham and wife Gina, Lalona Sturgill Hall and husband Chris, Aaron Leadingham, Whitney Leadingham and Brad Vanlandingham, four great-grandchildren, Eian Leadingham, Braden Leadingham, Gage Leadingham and Kendra Grace Vanlandingham; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Lily Leadingham, Lee and Wilma Leadingham, Arvin and Ida Leadingham all of Olive Hill, Ky, two sisters, Maxine Blankenbeckler and Floris Jones both of Michigan. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held Feb. 21, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Eddie Barker and Brother Clyde Bolling officiating.

Burial followed in the Hollingsworth Cemetery on Goose Creek Road in Grahn, Ky.

Chad Vanlandingham, Brad Vanlandingham, Michael Leadingham, Scott Leadingham, Aaron Leadingham and Chris Hall served as pallbearers.

Ernest Ray Estepp

1975 – 2010

MOREHEAD – Ernest Ray Estepp, 34, of Morehead, Ky, passed away Feb. 18, at his residence.

Mr. Estepp was born, June 1, 1975, in Johnson County, Ky, a son of the late Thomas Lloyd, Sr. and Kathleen Smith Estepp.

Ernest was self-employed and was a member of the United States Patriots Motorcycle Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Candy Jo Kathleen Osborne.

Survivors include his fiancé, Terri Morrison, three sons, Harlee Ryan Estepp, Christian Ray Estepp and Eli Dawson Estepp, step-son, Dawson Chance Wages all of Grayson, Ky, three daughters, Kegan Shaterra Estepp, Whitney Taylor Estepp both of Grayson, Ky, Peyton Estepp of Olive Hill, step-daughter, Tiphan Ray Wages of Grayson, Ky, five brothers, Linzie Henderson Estepp of Floyd County, Ky, Ronnie Estepp, Thomas Lloyd Estepp, Jr. and Otis Edward Estepp all of Olive Hill, Ky, and John Clifford Estepp of Hitchins, Ky, two sisters, Lorraine Middleton and Vernie Fay Estepp both of Grayson, Ky. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

A memorial service was held Feb. 22, at the Olive Hill Armory in Olive Hill, Ky. Burial will follow at a later date. Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Ky, is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to www.globefc.com



Ethel Pearl Toler Elkins

1920– 2010

SOUTH CAROLINIA – Ethel Pearl Toler Elkins, 89, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, formerly of Owingsville, Ky, passed away Feb. 19. Ethel was born June 20, 1920, in Logan County, West Virginia, daughter of the late D. B. and Rebecca Wright Toler. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Ron, Ray, Walter, and Ernest Clayton Toler.

Ethel’s husband, Howard Elkins, passed away May 30, 1980.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Ann Perdue and husband John of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, three sons, Richard Lee Elkins and wife Fran of Milton, Florida, Phillip Gene Elkins of Owingsville, Kentucky, Gregory Allan Elkins and wife Cindy of Milford, Delaware; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Also surviving are three sisters and their husbands, Elsie and Henry Fraley of Georgetown, Ky, Betty Staton and Herman Watts of Winchester, Ky, Joyce and David Plummer of Marion, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews.

Ethel was a homemaker, a former member of the Morehead Homemakers Club, and a long-time member of the Polksville Church of God, where she was also a Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services were conducted Feb. 23, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, with the Rev. Lowell C. Rice officiating.

Burial followed in the Brown Cemetery.



William L. Kouns, Jr.

1923 – 2010

ROSEMOUNT – William L. Kouns, Jr. {Bill}, passed away Feb. 2, at his home in Rosemount.

Bill was born to William L. Kouns, Sr. and Ina Mae (Callihan) Kouns on May 29, 1923, at Fort Thomas, Ky. His dad was a retired Army Military man with 30 years service.

Bill retired from Goodyear/Lockheed Martin Corporation, on Feb 3, 1993, with 40 years service. He was one of the first thirteen operators hired to start up the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He had served as a division manager, and retired as a senior staff consultant to the General Manager. He graduated from Prichard High School in Grayson, Ky, in the class of 1942, and then attended Memphis State University.

He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific and China Burma-India Theatres of operation with the United States Army.

While awaiting orders for the eventual participation in the invasion of Japan Proper, he drove in seven truck convoys transporting materials form Ledo, in India, to Kunming, in China, over Himalaya Mountains, passing through Japanese held territories. He was awarded three bronze battle stars. His operational unit was the World War II version of the later named M.A.S.H. units in the Korean War. The mission assignment for his organization was to eventually participate in the invasion of the Japanese homeland. Bill’s unit was in a state of readiness on the east coast of China, when President Harry Truman authorized the use of the Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. He strongly credited this action for, in effect, ending the Japanese war, there by saving hundreds of thousands of both American and Japanese lives.

Bill was a long time, member of Temple Baptist Church in Portsmouth. He was an ordained deacon. He had served as Sunday School Superintendent served as choir member, as well as a member of various other committees, and performed special tasks as directed by the church. He was a lifetime Mason (50 years) and member of Trimble Lodge #154 at Grayson, Ky, a Kentucky Colonel, a Gideon, member of the V.F.W. and member of the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion. He and his family were charter members of Cook Road Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, He was preceded in death by twin brothers, Chester and Hester Kouns, both died shortly after birth, a sister, Mary Ruth Jackson of Grayson, Ky, died in 2007.

Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (Davis) Kouns, whom he married on July 3, 1956. Also, one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Anne and Richard Feldner, two granddaughters, Laura and Sara Feldner, whom he purely loved. Also, one niece, Jill Bentley, and one nephew, William Bruce Jackson.

Visitation was at the F.C. Saehler Mortuary Funeral Home. Funeral Services were Feb. 5, and conducted by Pastor John Gowdy at the Funeral Home. Burial was at East Carter County Memory Gardens. James Dickey Post #23 American Legion will conduct military graveside services.



Ella Virginia “Jenny” Wells

1924 – 2010

GRAYSON – Ella Virginia “Jenny” Wells, 85, was called home to be with Jesus on Feb. 20, following a sudden illness.

She passed away surrounded by her family. Mrs. Wells, formerly of Auxier, attended Lake Road Freewill Baptist Church while she most recently lived in Grayson.

She was born on March 15, 1924, in Raceland, Ky, the daughter of the late Russell and Malta Reed Miller.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Charles “Jeff” Wells. Survivors include two sons: Larry (Hazel) Wells of Richmond, and Jeffrey (Jeanie) Wells of Banner; and a daughter Terri (George) Waggoner of Grayson; a brother John (Peggy) Miller of Washington; five grandchildren: Christopher Cool, Robin Daniel, Erin Waggoner, Kelly Crouse, and Himella Wells, and five great grandchildren.

Phelps and Son Funeral Home in Paintsville is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation was Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 prior to the funeral services. Burial was at the Auxier Relocation Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Lake Road Freewill Baptist Church, 2138 S. State Highway 7, Grayson, KY 41143, or Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.



Grant F. McGuire

1926 – 2010

MARMET WV – Grant F. McGuire, 83, of Winifrede Wva. Passed away Feb. 15, at his home. Grant was born at Hitchins, Ky. Son of Frank and Sephrania Easterling McGuire.

Funeral Services were held Feb. 19, at Leonard Johnson Funeral Home, Marmet, Wva.

Thelma Underwood

1929 – 2010

OHIO – Thelma Underwood, 81, beloved wife of Harry “Tom” Underwood, went to her eternal rest Feb. 2, at Summerville Nursing Home, Dayton, Ohio, where she had been a resident for nearly one year.

She was of the Baptist faith. Her parents were the late Coy and Sylvina Qualls of Carter County, Ky.

Preceding her in death were her son, Steven, who died in 2005, two sisters and a brother. In addition to Tom, her husband of 57 years, she is survived by her beloved nephew, Alan Maddix (Martha) and their two teenage sons of Sadieville, Ky.

Services were held at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering, Ohio, Feb. 8, with Rev. Jeff Hall, Chaplain for the Dayton Chapter of Hospice officiating.

Burial was at Beaver town Cemetery, Kettering, Ohio. Mrs. Underwood was a former teacher in Carter County. She was an avid reader with Guideposts and The Upper Room among her favorites.

She frequented the library bringing home shopping bags full of books. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.



Lafayette “Lafe” Boggs

1953 – 2010

SANDY HOOK – Lafayette “Lafe” Boggs, III 56 of Sandy Hook, Ky, passed away Feb. 9, at St. Mary’s Hopsital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born May 22, 1953 in Elliott County, a son of Glenna Gillum Boggs of Sandy Hook, and the late Lafayette Boggs, Jr.

Lafe was Cervid farmer and of the Baptist faith, he was also the Vice President of Ky, Alternative Livestock Association.

In addition to his father he is preceded in death by one son, Anthony Nathaniel Boggs, and one sister, Risa Boggs.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifteen years, Kay Ingram Boggs, two stepsons, Shawn Ballard and Jamie Ballard, three sisters and brothers in-law, Brenda and Roger Haney and Benita Adkins all of Sandy Hook, Ky, Martha and William Thomas of Lexington, Ky, also many other family and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral service were held Feb. 22, in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook with Bro. Warren Vanover officiating.

Burial followed in the Boggs Family Cemetery at Sandy Hook.

Kolby Watson, Jason Smith, Lowell Watson, Delbert Oney, Buck Bryant, Barry Stevens, Randy Boggs, and Matthew Harris served as pallbearers.

Jack C. L. Smith

1932 – 2010

MOREHEAD – Jack C. L. Smith, 77, of Burton Branch, passed away Feb, 21, in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1932 in Haldeman, Ky, a son of the late Marion Anderson Smith and Ada Susan Lands Smith Blevins.

Mr. Smith was a retired truck driver for the Ford Motor Company. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during Korea and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist Faith and a very active member of the Ashlar Masonic Lodge No. 91 in Detroit, Michigan and the Wayne County Coon Hunters Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skeet shooting and pitching horseshoes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, William R. Blevins, six brothers, Bill Smith, Robert “Toodle” Smith, J. Albert Blevins, Junior Blevins, Oather L. Blevins and Hilton Blevins and two sisters, Mary Evelyn Smith Clark and Jalaina Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Faye Sanders Smith, whom he married on August 13, 1958, two daughters, Pam (Faron) Henderson of Olive Hill and Patty (Bruce) Terrio of Hartland, Michigan, one brother, Charles Blevins of South Rockwood, Michigan, one sister, Marian Hunt of Garden City, Michigan, four grandsons, Nathan Ryver, J. J. Ryver, Michael Terrio and David Terrio, one great-granddaughter, Tatum Faye Ryver and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thurs. Feb. 25, in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. David Keeton and Rev. Andy Lands officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fultz Cemetery on Christy Creek.

Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Visitation is after 3 p.m. Wed. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wed. by the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654.

Pallbearers will be Michael Terrio, Jonathan Smith, Jay Vinson, Randy Mayle, Jim Young, Donald Brado, David Blevins and Nathan Ryver.

Lenora Stigall Bair

1916 – 2010

MOREHEAD – Lenora Stigall Bair, 93, of Soldier, passed away Feb.18,in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born on July 6, 1916 in Elliott County, Ky, a daughter of the late William Harrison Stigall and Chloe Cox Stigall.

Mrs. Bair was a homemaker. She attended the Bairtown Church of God and enjoyed working puzzles, playing cards, especially 500 Rummy and quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Bair, who passed away on Nov. 8, 1998, three sons, William Gilbert Bair, who passed away in 1937 and twin infant sons, Elmer and Delmer, who passed away in 1948 and one sister, Roxie Johnson.

Survivors include one son, Burlin Jackson Bair of Soldier, two daughters, Floella Baldridge of Clearfield and Loberta Knipp of Soldier, two brothers, Ledford Stigall of Shelby, Ohio and Lewis Stigall of Mansfield, Ohio, ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at Feb. 21, in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Elijah Wagoner and Rev. Justin Wagoner officiating.

Burial was in the Manning Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Matthew Knipp, Danny Knipp, Jason Tackett, Anthony Bair, Burlin Bair, Jr., Stephen Bair, Don Bruce Young III and Jacob Allen Brown.

Mitchell C. Hale

1933 – 2010

MT. STERLING – Mitchell C. Hale, 76, of Old Owingsville Road, Mt. Sterling, Ky, passed away Feb. 21, at his residence.

Born May 17, 1933, in Menifee County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Russell and Gladys Hughes Hale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Richard Hale, granddaughter-in-law, Melissa Oaks, and great granddaughter, Taylor Oaks.

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Barbara Hiler Hale, a daughter, Connie Hale Smith of Mt. Sterling, Ky, two grandchildren, Brent Oaks of Mt. Sterling, Ky, and Leisha Jones and husband Kenyon of Mt. Sterling, Ky, and four great grandchildren, Haley Willoughby, Courtney Oaks, Jaylen Oaks, and Dorian Jones.

Also surviving are two brothers, Harold Hale and wife Juanita of Frenchburg, Ky, and Darrell Hale and wife Eula Mae of Owingsville, Ky, four sisters, Eunice Sprague and husband Don of Monroe, Ohio, Janice Hunt and husband Johnny of Louisville, Ky, Pauline Karrick and husband Don of Owingsville, Ky, and Barbara Jones and husband Billy of Sudith, Ky, a special niece, Jackie Parks of Okeechobee, Florida, and a special friend, Frank Carr.

Mitchell was owner and operator of Hale Trucking and member of the Mt. Sterling First Church of God.

Funeral services will be conducted 11a.m. Wed. Feb. 24, at Mt. Sterling First Church of God with Jeff Perkins and David Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Machpelah Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Leisha Jones, Brent Oaks, Blake Ingram, Jarrod Jones, John Hunt, Tony Sprague, Wes Hale, Haley Willoughby, and Courtney Oaks. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mt. Sterling First Church of God Heritage Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Sterling First Church of God, Building Fund, 1051 Camargo Road, Mt. Sterling, Ky, 40353 or St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351.

Silas Eugene Hicks

1937 – 2010

HILLSBORO – Silas Eugene Hicks, 73, of Hillsboro, Ky, died Feb. 20, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida.

Mr. Hicks was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Greenup County, Ky, and formerly lived in Oldtown, Ky. He was a retired Armco Steel worker, an Air Force veteran, and a Mason for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Elaine Hicks, and his parents, Vernon and Ida Howard Hicks.

Survivors include a daughter, Wyenona Hicks of Memphis, Tennessee; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Mac McCauley of Cynthiana, Ky, a son and daughter-in-law, William and Patricia Hicks of Chesapeake, Ohio; one sister, Zola White of Cocoa Beach, Florida; one brother, Paul Hicks of Goldthwaite, Texas, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a special companion, Marge Lewis; extended family, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Ky, on Thurs. Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. Graveside services and burial will be held at East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson, Ky. Masonic services will be conducted at the graveside by Grayson Masonic Lodge No. 154.

Visitation will be held on Wed. Feb. 24, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Hutton Funeral Home, 7634 Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, Ky 41049.
