Star Elementary news
Our “Stars of the Week” for this week are Aaron Lucas and Natalie Messer. Aaron Lucas is in Mr. Walker’s fifth grade class. Mr. Walker says that Aaron is one of the first students to reach 50 AR points. He is a joy to have in class, and a student that always brings a smile to your face. Aaron is an excellent overall student. Way to go Aaron! Keep up the good work!
Our other “Star of the Week” is Natalie Messer. Natalie is in Mrs. Kennedy’s kindergarten class. Mrs. Kennedy says that Natalie is a joy to have in class. She always tries her best on all of her work. Natalie always has a smile on her face that is contagious to all that she comes in contact with. Way to go Natalie! We are so proud of you!
Mrs. Hay wants to congratulate all of her students who made the honor roll for the second nine weeks. They are Noah Riggs, Madison Flannery, Kailyn Combs, Emily McKenzie, Bradley Davis, Josette Isaacs, Christy Haney, Gabby Leitch, and Lelaney Harris.

Our Homeroom with highest attendance percentage for the first 4 days of the second semester went to Mr. Walker’s fifth grade class. They had 98.67% for the four days. Good job!
Reminder as we get back into the second semester if your child misses school it is important that you send an excuse when your child returns to school. Failure to do so will result in the absence being unexcused. Thank you for your cooperation.
Heritage Star of the Week
Star of the Week at Heritage Elementary School is Mr. Cody Sexton. Cody is a 4th grade student in Ms. Nikea McDavid’s class.
Cody is always on time and well mannered. He is a hard worker. Cody is kind and accepting of others. Ms. McDavid says that he is a joy to have in the classroom.
The faculty and staff want to congratulate Cody Sexton for being such an outstanding student.
KCU student teachers working in the county
Doctor Karen Ford, Coordinator of Student Teaching in the Keeran School of Education at Kentucky Christian University, reports that two students are completing teaching requirements in local school systems. The student teachers will gradually assume full instructional responsibilities in assigned classrooms over the course of fourteen weeks (70 days) to receive credit for this phase of their preparation program. Student Teachers this fall are divided between elementary and middle levels with one focused in elementary education and one in middle grades.
Prichard Elementary School has welcomed Mrs. Nicole Glancy Vance , a P-5 elementary education major, to work with Mrs. Robin Waggoner in third grade and Mrs. Darlene Gillispie in fifth grade.
West Carter Middle School is hosting Ms.Erin Younkin, a middle school major with emphasis areas in language arts and social studies. Ms. Kim Thompson (language arts) and Mrs. Vicki Glover (social studies) are working with Ms. Younkin.
The student teachers report that their placements are proceeding well. They are enjoying the opportunity to work with their new colleagues in the educational community and are looking forward to the beginning of their new professions.

Star says goodbye to Broughton
We would like to start by saying goodbye to one of our own. Our schools secretary Mrs. Marlene Broughton who retired on Jan. 19. One behalf of the staff, students, and community we want to wish her the best in her retirement. We will be hosting a retirement reception for Marlene at the school on Wednesday February 3, from 11:30-12:00 in the schools gym.
We also would like to welcome Mrs. Rhonda Marshall as our new secretary. Rhonda has been filling in for some time at the school and we would like to wish her all the best in her new job at the school.

Prichard Elementary news
Yellow Jackets of the month for January are Graycee Castle, Trevor Cline, Lexi Griffith, Brandon Kiser, Maci Moore and Michaela Potter.
Her classmates in Mrs. Young’s 3rd grade class elected Graycee Castle. Her classmates stated that Graycee is kind, helpful, honest and a good friend to all. She always has her homework and does her very best and they also say that Graycee is always willing to share and help out in the classroom.
Trevor Cline was chosen from Ms. Whitt's 1st grade classroom. The reasons he was elected include: he is an all around great student, always follows school rules, his homework is always turned in on time, he is a good listener and Trevor gets along well with others. Ms. Whitt also says that Trevor is very helpful and responsible and always tries his best in everything he does.
Lexi Griffith was chosen from Mrs. Wilcox's 3rd grade class. Lexi always begins the day with a smile on her face and is always prepared for the day. She is an excellent student and always participates in class and is willing to help out her classmates. Mrs. Wilcox says that Lexi keeps a positive attitude and gives her best effort each day!
Mrs. Waggoner has chosen Brandon Kiser because he has made such wonderful progress in third grade! All of his test scores have improved but he is most proud of his spelling grades. Mrs. Waggoner says that this is because Brandon always listens in class, has good behavior and studies at home even on weekends!
Mrs. Thomas' kindergarten class chose Maci Moore because she always uses her best class manners and is a friend to all the kids in the class. Maci's work is always beautiful and she usually wins the coloring contests. Mrs. Thomas and Ms. Susie love having Maci as such a great role model for their classroom!
Michaela Potter was chosen by her classmates in Ms. Thomas' 4th grade class. They say Michaela is an excellent student who always works hard and pays attention. She is very helpful and a great example for her classmates!

Heritage will be accepting donations for the Haiti relief fund February 1-5, 2010. Anyone wishing to donate money may do so by turning the money into his/her homeroom teacher or to Bridges Family Resource Center. All proceeds will go to Haiti via the Salvation Army. (Please make checks payable to the Salvation Army). Good Patriots Care About Others!

Will has been chosen because he is always polite and courteous to others. Will has a great attitude and will always try his hardest. He pays attention, helps others, and never gives up. Mrs. Hall is glad to have Will as part of her class. The faculty and staff are very proud to call Will Kees a Heritage Patriot.

Memorial Scholarship for High School Seniors
In honor and memory of Leon Tackett, People helping people’s Founder and Past President, PHP’s Board of Directors established a yearly scholarship program – the Leon Tackett Memorial Scholarship. This year, three local high school seniors will receive a one – time gift of $500 to help with tuition, books, fees, or other school – related expenses.
High school seniors from four local schools are eligible to apply for this scholarship program – Boyd County High School, East Carter High School, West Carter High School, and Greenup County High School. One scholarship will be awarded to a senior at each school. To be eligible, students must:
Be a graduating senior
Have a minimum GPA of 2.0
Show financial need
Not be related to anyone affiliated with people helping people, Inc.
Return the completed scholarship application to the guidance counselor by the April 30, 2010 deadline.
High school seniors from these four high schools may pick up applications for the 2010 scholarship in their guidance counselors office. Deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 30. Recipients will be notified in May.
ECMS Raider of the week McKenzie Parsons
McKenzie Parsons is a wonderful student! She is helpful, shows a remarkable work ethic, gets her work finished, and takes great care to do her best. McKenzie is a teacher's dream and always provides an encouraging smile to both her teachers and classmates. ECMS Raider of the week Nathan McCoy
The All-Stars have chosen Nathan McCoy as Raider of the Week! Nathan is well-mannered, mature, and is a wonderful young man to have in class. Nathan always strives to do his best on any assignment, and is a fantastic example for other ECMS students. He is quick to help out with any problem, and is well-liked by both classmates and teachers. Thanks, Nathan, for making each day better and brighter at ECMS!
Carter Elementary to host district cup
Local schools will gather Feb. 27 at Carter Elementary to take part in the District Governor’s Cup competition. The academic event administered by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition and sponsored by the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust, www.kysaves.com. Participating schools are Carter Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Olive Hill Elementary, Prichard Elementary and Star Elementary.
