FCCLA fall regional meeting



The annual Fall Regional FCCLA meeting took place Nov. 9 at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

At the meeting, workshops were held by the regional officers to demonstrate to school chapter officers how to correctly and efficiently run their offices.

Schools that attended were East Carter High School, Elliott County High School, West Carter High School, Paul Blazer High School, Lawrence County High School, Russell High School and East Carter Middle School.

After the workshops, those in attendance enjoyed a game of miniature golf and a motivational speech given by Bradley Cotton.



Annual spelling bee set



The 62nd Annual Carter County School’s Spelling Bee is set for Friday, Feb. 5 at West Carter Middle School.

Schools participating in the spelling bee are Carter, Carter Christian Academy, Heritage, Olive Hill, Prichard, Star, Upper Tygart, East Middle and West Middle. The event begins at 9 a.m. Each school may bring as many as four (4) spellers. Participants may be chosen from fourth through eighth grades only.

Immediately following the spelling bee, Superintendent Darlene Gee will present awards. There will be a champion speller plaque awarded to the overall winner. Additionally, a memento will be awarded to each of the 36 participants. Trophies and mementos are provided by our sponsors Citizen’s National Bank, Commercial Bank and the First National Bank. Pronouncing the event will be Mrs. Treva Barker. Judges will be Sandy Clayton, WCHS Librarian and Karen Marcum, ECHS Librarian



ECMS teacher named teacher of the year

Congratulations from ECMS students and staff to Krista Strother for being selected Grayson Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. Way to go Mrs. Strother.



East students attend FCCLA meeting



Three students from East Carter High School chapter of FCCLA attended the FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders) National Cluster Meeting No. 19 – 22.

The students were in charge of presenting an informational workshop to the attendees of the meeting.

Cooperating with Kentucky’s State MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) Representative Tara McGuire, the students effectively displayed the consequences of underage drinking to the audience.

Concluding two workshops, the students had presented to 488 students and advisors nation wide. Along with their presentation, the students attended meetings, general sessions and observed other informational workshops.

They would like to thank the Carter County Drug Task Force for helping them for the trip to the FCCLA National Cluster Meeting.



Prichard Elementary news



Yellow Jackets of the month for January are Graycee Castle, Trevor Cline, Lexi Griffith, Brandon Kiser, Maci Moore and Michaela Potter.

Her classmates in Mrs. Young’s 3rd grade class elected Graycee Castle. Her classmates stated that Graycee is kind, helpful, honest and a good friend to all. She always has her homework and does her very best and they also say that Graycee is always willing to share and help out in the classroom.

Trevor Cline was chosen from Ms. Whitt's 1st grade classroom. The reasons he was elected include: he is an all around great student, always follows school rules, his homework is always turned in on time, he is a good listener and Trevor gets along well with others. Ms. Whitt also says that Trevor is very helpful and responsible and always tries his best in everything he does.

Lexi Griffith was chosen from Mrs. Wilcox's 3rd grade class. Lexi always begins the day with a smile on her face and is always prepared for the day. She is an excellent student and always participates in class and is willing to help out her classmates. Mrs. Wilcox says that Lexi keeps a positive attitude and gives her best effort each day!

Mrs. Waggoner has chosen Brandon Kiser because he has made such wonderful progress in third grade! All of his test scores have improved but he is most proud of his spelling grades. Mrs. Waggoner says that this is because Brandon always listens in class, has good behavior and studies at home even on weekends!

Mrs. Thomas' kindergarten class chose Maci Moore because she always uses her best class manners and is a friend to all the kids in the class. Maci's work is always beautiful and she usually wins the coloring contests. Mrs. Thomas and Ms. Susie love having Maci as such a great role model for their classroom!

Michaela Potter was chosen by her classmates in Ms. Thomas' 4th grade class. They say Michaela is an excellent student who always works hard and pays attention. She is very helpful and a great example for her classmates!

3rd place-Haley Price

4th place-Kylie Myers

5th place-Caitlyn Cassell

The spelling bee will be held at West Carter Middle School on February 5th.



RAIDER OF THE WEEK JESSICA WAGES



Jessica Wages is an attentive student who always stays on task and listens to directions.

She is polite and kind to both her classmates and teachers. Jessica always completes her work and helps contribute to classroom discussions.

Jessica is very deserving of being named Raider of the Week. Congratulations Jessica.





ECMS RAIDER OF THE WEEK EMILY STEPHENS



Emily Stephens is a wonderful student to have in class. She is always prepared and has maintained a very high grade point average.

Emily always has a smile on her face and is polite and cooperative to both her classmates and teachers. Emily displays characteristics of a model student and is a great representative of ECMS. Way to go Emily.



Carter residents receives honors from Lindsey Wilson College



COLUMBIA – A Carter County resident has earned academic honors at Lindsey Wilson College for the 2009 fall semester.

Faris Moore of Grayson has been named to the dean’s list.

Students named to dean’s list earned at least a 3.50 graduate point average on a 4.0 scale and attempted at least 12 credit hours during the semester.

Founded in 1903, Lindsey Wilson is a distinctive liberal arts college affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. Lindsey Wilson offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in 20 career areas, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and master’s degrees in three career areas. The college’s 2009-10 enrollment is a record 2,341 students.
