Spring Enrollment Growth In Double Digits At KCTCS
Ashland – Spring enrollment growth is in the double digits at the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). Preliminary figures show that the number of students enrolled system wide this spring is up 18 percent compared to spring 2009.
At Ashland Community and Technical College, enrollment is up 14 percent for spring 2010 compared to last year.
“We are pleased to continue to transform the lives of our growing number of students,” said Greg Adkins, ACTC President and CEO. “Particularly in this economy, community and technical college education continues to be the most affordable higher education choice.”
The growth in enrollment follows record numbers for KCTCS’ fall 2009 enrollment, with an 11.6 percent growth system wide. At Ashland Community and Technical College, fall enrollment was up over 10% compared to the previous year.
For the fall 2009 semester, throughout KCTCS, growth occurred in all age groups, with non-traditional students ages 25 and older experiencing the largest increase, with 14.3 percent more students in this age group attending KCTCS in fall 2009 compared to fall 2008. The average age of KCTCS students rose from 27 years in fall 2008, to 27.3 years in fall 2009.
In fall 2009, students ages 18-24 had an 11.3 percent increase in enrollment, while the number of students under the age of 18 grew 8.8 percent. Distance education courses were a strong area of growth as well, with a 25 percent increase in enrollment, from 31,292 in 2008 to 41,703 in 2009.
Fall 2009 enrollment numbers showed that the KCTCS programs with the biggest increases in students were in the following areas: health professions; liberal arts and sciences; business, management and marketing; mechanics and repair technologies; and computer/information sciences/support services.

KSP graduates 1st citizens’ police academy
The Kentucky State Police Post 14 in Ashland graduated its first Citizens Police Academy Graduation. The class was attended by students from Carter, Greenup, Boyd and Lawrence Counties. The graduation took place Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
Students attended class one night each week for 11 weeks to learn and participate with the state troopers and other agency personnel to gain a better understanding about the KSP.
The attendees received instruction on the numerous aspects of the Kentucky State Police including but not limited to conducting traffic stops, crime scene investigation and collision investigation.
Col. Mike Sapp and Captain David Hay were present at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. to present graduation certificates.
The KSP would like to congratulate all the students and express thanks to Mr. Fred Jackson and all members of King’s Daughters Medical Center for assistance in making this event a success.
