Jan. 25, 2012 —
Two weeks after West Carter pulled an upset over East Carter in round one of the cross county rivalry, the Lady Raiders came out seeking revenge.
East not only pulled out a victory over the Lady Comets, but they did so in dominating fashion, winning in Grayson Saturday night, 63-41.
“We came out ready to go, it was a big district game that we needed to win. It felt great to get this one here tonight,” Lady Raider junior forward Kerie Steele said following Saturday’s win against West.
The first quarter saw both teams come out playing hard-nosed defense, earning each and every basket.
West took advantage of its size, with Shelby Fultz battling down low for four points. The Lady Raiders on the other hand, played off its speed by creating havoc, with guard Megan Stickler penetrating to the basket nabbing four first quarter points of her own.
East girls came out with high intensity on offense, yet they still could not seem to find the bottom of the net from long range.
Fortunes would change for the Lady Raiders in the second period.
With two big three-pointers by freshman guard Abby Damron midway through the second period, East finally broke the ice from beyond the arc.
A balanced scoring effort for the Lady Raiders in the period enabled the home team to pull away from the Lady Comets late in the quarter. Damron, Stickler, Corina Gee, Kristin Mayo, and Kelsey Stumbo all scratched the scorebooks for East in the second, making for a balanced team effort.
Gee had 11 points in the win against West. Gee said her team’s effort as a team played a big part in the win.
“We played really well as a team tonight,” Gee said. “We were prepared, and we have worked a lot on trying to have more confidence in ourselves. We have learned to lift each other up when things aren’t going our way, and that makes a big difference.”
The Lady Comets showed little intent of giving in so easily, as they finally began to regain offensive flow.
Facing a now or never scenario, senior West Carter forward Paige Tackett put her team on her shoulders in the third, scoring nine in the quarter.
The only problem was that the Lady Raiders hadn’t slowed down offensively, knocking down three trifectas, all by three different players.
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, East Carter was able to keep West Carter at bay, having its lead only cut by two, 42-34.
“They fought us hard there in the third,” Steele said. “We knew they weren’t going to quit, we just had to keep playing our game.”
There was no Lady Comet magic in the final period, as the Lady Raiders secured the victory, scoring 21 points in the fourth, while West scored only seven.
Stickler, Gee, and Pennington lead the way for the Lady Raiders scoring 14, 11, and 10, respectively.
Tackett lead the way for the Lady Comets scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Fultz also had a good game, battling for 10 points down low.
Following the win, the Lady Raiders went on to defeat Morgan County on the road, 51-39, improving its record to 12-10 overall and 5-1 in district play.
The Lady Comets also came away with a victory following its loss to East, hammering Elliott County 75-47 to improve to 6-12, with a record of 3-2 in the district.
