Boyd County had the 3-ball rocking Tuesday night.Good thing for the Lions, because they needed every one of their 13 treys to get past a gritty West Carter squad 67-65 at Boyd County Middle School.
Boyd County coach Randy Anderson enjoyed watching his team hit 54 percent from beyond the arc, but could never feel comfortable until the final horn. “We shot really well out there,” Anderson said. “Sad thing, it felt like West Carter matched it.”
That was certainly the case in the third quarter, when the teams combined for 52 points including 10 triples. All of them came in the last 6:25 of the period as each side repeatedly answered the other.
In the end, six different Boyd County players finished with multiple 3-pointers. “They are all very good shooters,” West Carter coach Jeremy Webb said. “That makes it hard to get out and defend them.”
The Comets hung tight all the way, however, despite playing their fourth game in six days. Jacob Layne and standout Kyle Brown each connected on three 3-pointers.
West Carter hardly resembled a team that came in with only one win in six games after graduating four starters.
“Anytime you play a Jeremy Webb team, you know they are going to have good discipline, play hard and try to do the right things,” Anderson said.
Brown, who has been on a roll, opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to pull the Comets within two points. Boyd County maintained the lead down the stretch, but the teams were never separated by more than five points.
“Even with some tired legs our guys gave a gutty performance,” Webb said. “Where we’ve come from since the first week of the season, the confidence is starting to grow. You can tell they are learning to play with each other.”
Brown returned after sitting out part of the final period with four fouls, and Layne’s third trey of the second half trimmed the Lions’ lead to 61-59 with 3:21 remaining.
Boyd County (5-3) responded with a Brandon Taylor putback and the Lions turned in a solid effort the rest of the way.
With the score at 63-61, Taylor made a hustle play on the defensive end to create a held ball situation and give possession to the Lions.
“We were able to execute late and get stops when we needed to,” Anderson said.
Austin Hunt and Bobby Anderson each sank two free throws in the last 23 seconds to help Boyd County seal it.
West Carter’s Brown made a running bank shot in the closing seconds to set the final score. He finished with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Austin Hunt led Boyd County with 19 points, including 13 in the second quarter when the Lions took a 29-22 halftime lead.
Brandon Lowe had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions. Both of his 3-pointers came in the third quarter.
Boyd County received a huge boost from its bench. Grayson Griffith, Tristan Burgess and Bobby Anderson combined for 27 points and seven 3-pointers. Burgess was 3-for-4 from long range. “Tristan is a deadeye shooter,” the Lions coach said. “Grayson has been so consistent the last four or five games. He brings a lot of energy.”
West Carter’s coach was impressed. “Boyd County is a very solid, deep team,” Webb said. “I could easily see them winning this region.”
For West Carter, junior guard Dalton Spurlock put in 16 points and Layne scored 11.
