Jan. 25, 2012 —
The West Carter Comets played at Fairview gymnasium last Thursday night with Frankfort in its sights.
West’s boys had no problem taking care of Fairview in the finals of the All “A” Classic Region final, winning with ease, 57-43.
From the moment the Comets took the floor they did not give the Eagles a chance to threaten an upset.
Kyle Brown and Travis Duvall started the night off right for West, connecting on a few jumpers, while senior Kyle Cundiff connected on a big three, giving the Comets a 14-point total in the first quarter.
Defensively the Comets put the heat on Fairview’s guards, forcing turnovers that turned into transition baskets for the boys from Olive Hill.
West Carter Head Coach Jeremy Webb said his team’s good fortune in the All “A” was due to simply playing good basketball.
“We won our games by just trying to play solid fundamental basketball,” Webb said. “We also played solid defense, keeping all of our opponents under 50 in each game.”
In the second period, the Comets continued its consistent play on offense while smothering the Eagles on the defensive end.
Brown continued his good shooting, knocking down two threes, symbolizing the proverbial nail in the coffin for Fairview.
Webb said the Comets solid play comes from within its impressive teamwork.
“This group is a very close-nit bunch of guys that enjoy competing,” Webb said. “As close as they are, they really play well for one another and hate to let their teammates down.”
With an inspiring performance on the defensive end, combined with patience on offense, the Comets were able to build a 20-point advantage heading into the fourth, 42-22.
Allowing Fairview to keep the game respectable, West let up on defense enough for the Eagles to score 21 fourth quarter points.
The Comets were never threatened, as they connected on 9 of 10 free throws to help secure the win.
Brown lead the way for West Carter putting 22 points in the score column, while senior big man Derek Lawson also added 12 in the blowout victory.
Webb and his boys now look to make the trip to Frankfort for its second consecutive year in the All “A” State Tournament.
“Our guys have gone through this experience before,” Webb said. “I really hope that they will draw upon last year’s experience and allow themselves to play a more relaxed game.”
Rise and shine will be the name of the game for West Carter when they wake up for an 8:30 a.m. matchup with Webster County in the All “A” State Tournament first round.
