Lady Comets take two

Aug. 25, 2010 — If the Lady Comets don’t win another game this season, they will have had a better year than 2009. With a 1-16-1 record last season and a brand new coach, maybe West’s first two opponents of the year weren’t expecting much from the young team…and that was a huge mistake.

West’s gals opened the season with a 3-2 win over Greenup County Thursday.

Amber Buckley led the Lady Comets in scoring with two goals and Tori Knipp nailed one.

Charlene Colegrove was in goal for the win.

“We had to really adjust to Greenup County’s defense,” Coach Lauren Melzer said. “They held back a lot more players than we are used to, but once we got used to that we did really well.”

On Monday, the Lady Comets played host to Menifee for a 1-0 win.

Buckley had the goal on an assist from Hayley Gonzalez. Colegrove was once again in goal for the win.

“They had the same heavy defensive style as Greenup,” Melzer said. “We were ready for it and we got a lot of shots on goal, we just didn’t find the back of the net a lot.”

But the solo goal was enough for the second win of the season.

East traveled to Lawrence County Tuesday (after press time). Melzer wasn’t worried about back-to-back games for her team.

“I think the win last night will help,” Melzer said in a pre-game interview. “Everyone is so excited that they will push hard for another one tonight.”

The Lady Raiders head to Ashland Blazer on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match up. Melzer plans to compensate for the Kitten’s speed with extra defense.
