For several years, Brooke Callihan, Megan Centers, Chelsea Zeigler and Mikaela Buckler have put everything they had into the West Carter girls basketball program.
A storied tradition the Lady Comets possess, they play their heart out each time they take the court.
Last Tuesday, these four seniors were honored just before their final home game on John “Hop” Brown Court against Fleming County.
However, the Lady Panthers spoiled all of the fun by defeating the Lady Comets 54-40.
“They hit tough shots and we missed layups,” said Bart Stevens, West Carter girls coach. “That’s the situation we’ve been in all year. We’ve just got to finish shots.”
It was a competitive first half between Fleming and West.
The Lady Panthers took the first quarter after connecting on a buzzer beating three to put them ahead 16-14. It was back and forth in the second with West racing out to a 21-17 lead after Centers hit a three and a free throw. Fleming led 27-25 at the break.
But the third quarter proved costly for West Carter after going just 1-9 from the field on a Brooke Adkins three-point shot with 12 second left on the clock. Fleming County pushed the lead to 10 at 40-30 after the third.
“We had good shots, we just took a spell where we couldn’t hit them,” Stevens said. “We can't do that and expect to win. We missed eight shots in the third and we should’ve had a six-point lead.”
From that point it was all Fleming. Tierra Taylor had 13 points, including nine in the first quarter.
Centers, who had 11 points and seven rebounds in her last game in Olive Hill, reflected on her time at West Carter.
“It means a lot,” Centers said. “Our program here has had a lot of success and it’s an honor to wear a Lady Comet jersey. I’ve had a really great time throughout the years and I’m really proud to be part of this program.”
Sophomore Lexie Berry led West with 13 points and seven rebounds. Callihan scored nine points, Brooke Adkins had five points and Morgan Berry had two points.
“They’re quality kids,” Stevens said of his four seniors. “They’ve never given me a minute’s worth of trouble. There is not much you could ask for. If they don’t score another basket the rest of the year, they’re still quality kids to me.”
The regular season is finished and the Lady Comets have their sights set on a District Championship. They square off with Morgan County Wednesday night in Grayson at 8 p.m.
