The West Carter Comets closed out their season at 10-15 last week with a first-round District loss to Elliott, 75-71.
Elliott grabbed an early 19-11 lead in the first quarter, but West battled back to lead by two at the half. In the third, the Comets had jumped out to a 12-point lead and it looked like the defending Regional champion Lions would be one and out.
Elliott County junior Timmy Knipp had other ideas.
Knipp stepped up his game and slammed in 28 points in the second half, chipping away the Comet’s lead and eventually their chance at a regional seed.
“Obviously we played well for three and a half quarters,” Coach Jeremy Webb said. “They did some run and jump pressure on us. Knipp was the difference in the game. He played extremely well and really did what he needed to do to help his team win the game.”
The Comets did a great job on offense with four players in double digits. Aaron Rayburn led West in scoring with 20 points and Kyle Brown put up 17. Harrison Bond had 13 and Cody Stamper put up 11. Derrick Lawson sank six and Justin Jarrell had four.
“Every team in the state except one ends their season with a loss,” Webb said. “We have a good nucleus to build on next year and we look forward to those guys coming back.”
