West’s gals beat Elliott County in the first round of the District tournament last week, 55-36.
“I thought our defense was the key to the win,” Coach Tex English said. “We contested their shots very well and made some good ones of our own.”
Kristin Perry led the Lady Comets with a double-double 22 points and 21 rebounds. Paige Tackett had a double-double too, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Lou Reynolds put up five and Brittany Oney had three, Janice Shepherd hit one from the field.
Overall, the Lady Comets nailed 32 percent from the field and went 14-for-26 at the line.
On Thursday, West had the opportunity to grab the District title from cross-county rival East Carter. East ended up on top, beating West 52-43.
The Lady Comets held their own in the first two quarters, leading by three at the half. The Lady Raiders found their rhythm in the fourth quarter, going on a 10-0 run that led to their win.
“I thought our effort was good,” English said. “Our kids played hard and really wanted to win. Down the stretch our inexperience showed. I am proud of our girls’ effort.”
Perry grabbed another double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Tackett put up 10. Reynolds and Tackett had three each while Oney hit one from the field.
Overall, West hit 40-percent from the charity stripe and 38-percent from the field.
The Lady Comets ended their season Monday night at 15-10. West traveled to Ashland Blazer and suffered a 49-41 loss to the Kittens.
Ashland led by one at the end of the first quarter, but West battled back to lead 23-17 at the half. The Kittens turned things around in the third, taking a six point lead and West was unable to catch up.
“I thought we executed the game plan to a T in the first half,” English said. “The girls panicked in the third quarter and we lost momentum. We got good shots off in the third we just didn’t make them. When that happens the defense slacked off.”
Perry grabbed another post-season double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Oney put up eight and B. Tackett sank six. P. Tackett had four, Lou Reynolds two and Shepherd nailed one from the charity stripe.
Overall the Lady Comets hit just under 33-percent from the field and went 7-for-11 at the line.
English said it is hard to come this far in his first season at the helm to lose now, but he is excited about next season.
“I couldn’t have picked two better seniors than Brittany Tackett and Brittany Oney to start my first year with,” English said. “They have a great future and I am extremely proud of what good leaders they have been for us. I was extremely proud of the team’s effort.”
