A team on the rise always looks to end the regular season on a strong note.
This is exactly what the West Carter boys soccer team did in its final two home games, defeating Fleming County on senior night, 3-1, before wrapping things up with a 4-2 win over Menifee County.
Last Tuesday, the Comets said goodbye to three of its program mainstays, Dylan P’Simer, Matthew Patrick and Justin Ratliff. There was much to celebrate on the night of their departure.
Ratliff once again shined bright for the Comets, pushing his team to victory with two goals on the night, while Allan Mays contributed the other, to hand West its 11th win on the year. Ratliff nabbed the assist to his younger counterpart.
West Carter Head Coach Max Hammond spoke about the emotions of senior night.
“That's three seniors that we’ve had with this program since the eighth grade,” Hammond said. “They mean a lot to this team, and we’re going to miss them for sure. We’ve still got some soccer left to play and hopefully we can really send them out on top when we start this postseason next week.”
After picking up the big win over the Panthers, the Comets weren’t yet done with their trek through the regular season.
Thursday evening’s matchup against visiting Menifee County was the final time the boys in maroon took their home field, and they made the most of the opportunity.
With a tenacious defensive effort, the Comets were able to tame the Wildcats. Even though it was a non-district matchup, it was business as usual for Hammond’s squad.
There was quite a division of wealth on the offensive end as Ratliff picked up the game’s first goal, followed up with goals throughout the game by Mays, P’Simer and Tyler Glover.
Ratliff also played distributor with two assists on the night, while P’Simer and T.J. Brickles also picked up assists for the home team. Keeper Alex Mays was inside the nets for the win, while the West Carter program completed its best record ever at 12-7-2.
Set to play Greenup County last night after press time in the first round of the 62nd District Tournament, Hammond said he felt positive about his team’s chances.
“I think we are looking pretty good headed into districts,” Hammond said. “We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and we feel we can compete with the best this region has to offer.”
