Lady Raider soccer wins another

One down, two to go.

The district number may have changed for the East Carter Lady Raiders, but the result did not.

Four goals in the first half made way for a 6-0 victory as the girls in blue took down district foe Greenup County at KCU Stadium on Saturday.

Tournament MVP Macy Dyer spoke about her team’s victory.

“It’s always good to pick up another title,” Dyer said. “But, we are focused on a bigger prize.”

Taylor Burnett kicked things off for East, delivering a strike two-minutes in from 15 yards out in front of the net.

The bright spot for East Carter on this day was Alexa Sturgill. Sturgill followed up Burnett’s goal one-minute later with a 15-yard strike of her own.

Following a Dyer goal, Sturgill struck again, this time with an assist from Lexi Cline.

“I really didn’t do anything different today, I just went out and played soccer,” Sturgill said. “This was a team effort, and I had shots I just took and made.”

For the first 40 minutes of play, Sturgill and East Carter outshot the Lady Musketeers 11-0, making life easy on goalie Starr Caldwell.

Following the first half, the Lady Raiders decided to build upon its 4-0 lead, taking just seven minutes to do so.

Cline joined her fellow teammates in the scorer’s column, making a deep shot from 18 out.

The five-point advantage was not enough, as sophomore Hannah Losch picked up the game’s final score just before the 76th minute.

Adding another goal to their trophy case, East Carter Head Coach Ben Fritz said he feels privileged to coach such a talented group of girls, but doesn’t want to put to much into the win.

“What can I say, other than these girls came out and did what they were supposed to,” Fritz said. “I feel luck to be able to coach such a talented group, and they really have a great passion for this game. Next week, we hope to play just as solid, and if we do that, I see no reason why we couldn’t get that regional repeat.”

Receiveing a bye in the first round of the regional tournament, the Lady Raiders look to avenge an earlier loss to Russell this year when they battle the Lady Devils tonight in the 16th Region semifinals.

We will have more Lady Raider soccer in next week’s edition of Journal-Times sports.
