Lady Raider volleyball clinches 62nd title

East Carter’s matchup with Morgan County proved to be no issue for the Lady Raiders volleyball team last Thursday night.

The district championship match ended in a 3–0 victory for East Carter, advancing them on to the regional tournament.

Beginning in a close head-to-head set, the Lady Raiders finally planted down and dominated the court for the remainder of the match.

The 25–20 East Carter win would be the closest that Morgan County would get the entire night.

With a strong presence on the net and a dominant hitting force of Whitney Gollihue, their attack on Morgan was left unanswered as East’s girls went to take the set, and the district championship.

East Carter coach Cathy Harris was pleased with the girls’ turnaround.

“If we keep focused on playing team ball, we should have a pretty good shot moving up in regionals this year,” said Harris.

Senior Kacy Obrien was also excited on the championship victory.

“We worked really hard to get to this point, and I think we have a lot of potential if we play as a team and do what we did tonight,” said Obrien.

The Lady Raiders continued their progression towards a regional title last night after press time when they took on Fleming County at West Carter.

Journal-Times will have more on this and the rest of the 16th Region games in next week’s edition of sports.
