April 25, 2012 — The 2011-2012 high school basketball season turned out to be another success for both the girls and boys programs of East and West Carter.
Finishing up with a record of 25-8, the Comets pulled in a second-straight appearance in the All “A” State tournament, while picking up an EKC Regular Season Championship.
The Raiders also gave East fans something to cheer about after it shocked the 62nd District with its dramatic championship win over West Carter in the finals, advancing all the way to the regional semifinals before losing to eventual champion Ashland.
On the girls side, the Lady Raiders of East Carter compiled quite the season. Despite having only two upperclassmen, East’s girls ended with a 17-16 record and an appearance in the 16th Region Tournament.
In recognition of the best players in the area, the Journal-Times' sister paper, the Ashland Daily Independent, has coaches from local schools select who they feel should be recognized for outstanding play during the season.
The All-Area girls and boys basketball teams are a prestigious honor for players who have the opportunity to make the squad.
For the Comets, the dynamic duo of junior Kyle Brown and 16th Region Co-Player of the Year senior Derek Lawson rounded out the two spots on the team for West Carter.
Not to be outdone, the Raiders had two players to join their cross-county rivals on the area hoops honor roll, with senior leaders Dylan Genung and Connor Robinson representing the East boys program.
Rounding out things for the girls was East Carter 7th grader Kristen Mayo and freshman guard Megan Stickler, providing youth to the overall experience group of area all stars.
West’s girls unfortunately did not see anyone make the 2012 All-Area roster.
