Comets fall at Russell

Sept. 26, 2012 — The West Carter Comet football team could not overcome three turnovers early as they suffered a 34-6 defeat against Russell Friday night.

There was very little that went right for West as Russell (3-2) took advantage of two turnovers for scores. The Red Devils had more than 300 yards rushing led by the attack of Troy Huffine, Googie Hayes and Bryant Cathey, who all reached the endzone.

“We had our chances in the first half to kind of put them back on their heels,” Comets Coach, Kevin Brown said. “But we turned the ball over right back to them. I think Russell is a solid team. From what I’ve seen, they’re the best team in the district.”

Comets Running Back Tristen Mitchell anchored the running game for West Carter, (0-5) including a 65-yard kickoff return in the third quarter that helped set up a Braden Brown 23-yard touchdown to give West its only points of the contest.

“I was really proud of our effort,” Brown said. ”Execution part was a little off there, but I feel like we improved from this game from the last game and that’s what I’m looking for.”

As a team, West ran 50 plays for 141 yards of total offense. Brown went 3-12 for 14 yards while the running attack compiled 127 yards on 38 attempts. But Brown said the offense must take care of the football if they are going to compete the rest of the way.

“We’ve got to do a better job if we’re going to have success,” Brown said.

Russell Coach Ivan McGlone was pleased with his team’s big district victory but also gave credit to West Carter after the game.

“I know West is a little young, but they execute well,” McGlone said. “When they mature, they’ll probably be pretty good.”

With the loss to the Red Devils, West Carter falls to 0-20 against Russell. The Comets will host in-county rival, East Carter Friday at Michael Blankenship Memorial Field.
