East volleyball moves toward postseason with another win

Oct. 3, 2012 —     The first two games of the night weren’t huge blowouts, but that doesn’t mean East Carter’s volleyball team was ever threatened.

After winning the first two games of the night 25-16, the East Carter Lady Raiders left Lawrence County with quite a memory of its team, taking the third 25-8 to win the set 3-0.

A big part of that large margin of victory in the third match was due to a 13-3 start by East, led by strong serving from senior libero Stephanie Gollihue’s delivery of several aces.

Gollihue recently returned from injury and has helped to provide a spark to her team down the stretch of the season.

“It felt great to get back out there and be able to help my team,” Gollihue said. “When I got injured I was afraid I may not play again, but I am just glad we are playing well at the end of the season.”

Defensively, senior Ashli Smith and Whitney Gollihue kept most of Lawrence’s shot attacks at bay, converting on several big time kills to push the Lady Raiders lead to 19-6.

Sophomore Dana Beichelespecizale put the final nail in the Lady Bulldogs’ coffin late in the game, reeling off four-straight unanswered points to end the contest.

With East Carter now back over .500 at 16-15, Stephanie Gollihue says she feels her team is playing with great cohesiveness and that has made all the difference.

“I think we have really started to gel at the end of the season here, and if we continue to play well together, I think we have as good a shot as anybody at winning this region.”
