Comets fall to Menifee, face off with Rowan

The Comets fell to 4-2 on their season last Tuesday with an 83-75 loss to Menifee County at home.

West’s boys came out rusty and quickly trailed by 15 points. At the end of the first quarter, Menifee was up 22-7.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” West Coach Jeremy Webb said. “Menifee is a good team. We always talk about how you can’t win a game in the first quarter, but you sure can lose one.”

Offensively, the Comets struggled to hit their shots. They suffered several unforced turnovers, a problem that has plagued West this season. The Comets were able to cut Menifee’s lead to one and two points several times in the second half, but were unable to finish off a victory.

“It just wasn’t our night,” Webb said. “We couldn’t get a stop or basket when we needed it to get us over the hump.”

The Comets hit the road Tuesday (after press time) to face 2-4 Rowan County.

“Rowan is an athletic and talented team,” Webb said in a pre-game interview. “They have improved a lot and will be ready to play. Our guys need to be ready to go in the beginning of the game and play for 32 minutes.”

West heads to the Larue County National Guard Holiday Classic Monday. They open tournament play with 2-6 Whitley County.

“Traditionally Whitley County has a good ball club,” Webb said. “They are big and physical. This is an opportunity for our team to grow together and work on areas where we are weak. We have three games in three days to get better.”

  • Gonazalez Lady Comets take two

If the Lady Comets don’t win another game this season, they will have had a better year than 2009. With a 1-16-1 record last season and a brand new coach, maybe West’s first two opponents of the year weren’t expecting much from the young team…and that was a huge mistake.
