When you are a team seeking its first win, the general rule of thumb is that you give all of yourself to attain coveted victory.
After falling behind 12-0, the West Carter Comets made a run at district opponent Fleming County, cutting the lead to five before the Panthers punched in another score to hand West its seventh loss of the season, 18-7.
West Carter Head Coach Kevin Brown commended his team’s effort on the night.
“After our second half performance last week, I said the true character of our football team would be revealed in this game,” Brown said. “I thought our team gave a great effort on both sides of the ball tonight. We played hard, we just happened to come up a little short.”
Despite a solid effort defensively, West Carter could not keep Fleming County’s strong passing game completely in check as the Panthers struck first when quarterback Jacob Boyd hooked up with a streaking Maverick Barnett for a 56-yard touchdown pass, three minutes into the game.
The Comet defense played big the entire night, with defensive end Ryan Conley supplying much of the fuel with several stops in the backfield. Conley led the Comets with an impressive 12 tackles on the night.
Boyd continued to provide consistency in place of suspended quarterback Desmond McAdams, scrambling for a four-yard dive into the end zone just before the end of the half, allowing Fleming to take a 12-0 lead into the half after a missed two-point conversion.
In the fourth, Brown’s boys finally caught a break on the offensive end when an interception was called back for a late hit. Running back Austin Travis capitalized, breaking free for a 34-yard touchdown run. A Tristen Mosbey extra-point put West Carter in an unexpected position, trailing 12-7 with nine minutes to go.
After an exchange of possession, the Comet defense stepped up to the plate again, putting up an iron curtain on a goal-line stand, only to see Boyd play the reaper when he hit Chaise Bulley on a 7-yard flag route to back pylon on the left side of the end zone.
“If we keep fighting, something good is going to happen for us. I have faith in these boys, and I am very proud of the effort they gave here tonight,” said Brown.
Now at 0-7, the Comets look to pick up their first win when they make a trip to Mason County, who currently sit at first place in the district.
