After suffering a second-half scoring ailment against Fleming County Saturday night, first-year head coach Bart Stevens and the West Carter Lady Comets looked to steady their ship Monday night in Morgan County.
Monday’s EKC consolation game against Rowan County unfortunately followed the same path, as West’s girls failed to keep up with the Lady Vikings in the second half, falling by a 59-41 score.
Things looked good for the Lady Comets in the first quarter, as a zone defense gave Rowan County fits in its half court game.
Leading 9-6 with under a minute to play, Faith Conn connected on a three pointer to pull the Lady Vikings within one.
Applying a full court press, sixth-grade guard Morgan Berry picked off an arrant pass, dishing an outlet to Brooke Callihan for a layup that helped to give West an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Though West Carter has struggled to manufacture points, Stevens said he thought he saw improvement offensively.
“We didn’t shoot the ball great, but I think we are getting more comfortable with one another offensively,” Stevens said. “We realize we have to score more points, and we’re trying to figure out how to do that.”
Rowan County’s Hannah Bandura opened up the second period with five-straight points to give her team back the lead, 13-11.
The teams went back and forth for the duration of the second, as West responded shortly after with a layup by Bonita Easterling and two free throws by senior center Megan Centers to take back the lead at 14-13.
Rowan’s long-range prowess came in handy as Becca Duff connected on one of her four threes on the evening to giver her team a one-point advantage with four minutes to play before the end of the half.
A jumper by Lexie Berry tied the game at 16, before Rowan County went on a 5-0 run.
Trailing 21-16, West did not let the game slip away just yet, as the Berry sisters combined for six points just before the half, with Lexie Berry knotting the score at 22 as the buzzer sounded.
A 20-7 third period by Rowan County told the story of the night, as West Carter was never able to recover.
“It just seems like we can’t get one to fall sometimes and that’s what happened in the second half,” Stevens said. “I am very proud of how hard the girls are playing, and if we keep doing that, good things are going to start to happen for us.”
Callihan led the way for West Carter with 13 points, while Lexie Berry had nine and Centers contributed 5.
The Lady Comets will host Rowan County Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
