Feb. 6, 2013 — The West Carter Girls Basketball team will be the No. 2 seed in the 62nd District tournament in two weeks after defeating Elliott County 47-39 on Monday night.
The win gives the Lady Comets a 4-2 record in district play to assure West the second seed when the postseason begins.
Coach Bart Stevens is proud of his team’s effort Monday night against the Lady Lions.
“It was a close competitive game and our girls made some big plays in the last two minutes of the game for us to win it.”
Sophomore Lexie Berry was big down the stretch, connecting with a three-pointer with two minutes left in the game to put West up by one point. She finished with nine points.
Stevens’ ball club kept the game in their control doing what they always do by taking care of the basketball and getting to the free throw line.
“We didn’t play a slow game and we only turned the ball over nine times,” Stevens said. “We went 18-22 from the line which was big for us to get the win.”
Stevens said his team defense really sparked West to keep the Lady Lions at bay.
“Elliott is a good shooting team,” Stevens said. “We guarded the shooters really well and we rebounded the ball well getting 40 rebounds and there’s only been one or two games where we’ve been out-rebounded overall. It was a nice win for us.”
Brooke Callihan led West with 19 points. Fellow senior Megan Centers had 15 points and nine rebounds improve West Carter’s record to 9-13.
“It was a close competitive game and getting our players to make big plays to close out the game was pivotal for us,” Stevens said.
The 62nd District Tournament begins in two weeks and Stevens said earning the No. 2 seed gives West a better opportunity to advance in the postseason.
“It put us in a position to not play No. 1 seed in the tournament (until the championship game) and it gives us an opportunity to play in the regional tournament.”
West Carter is back on the road tomorrow night when they travel to Morgan County.
