Virgie Humphreys
1926–2009
CLIO – Virgie Humphreys, of Clio, 83, died August 18, at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Virgie was born Dec. 18, 1926 in Carter City, Ky, to the late William and Margaret (Kiser) McGlone.
Funeral services were held August, 21, at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio.

Jack Burns Calhoun
1941–2009
GRAYSON – Jack Burns Calhoun, 69 of Grayson died August 25, at Kings Daughter Medical Center, in Ashland.
He was born July 7, 1941, in Grayson, a son of the late Lawrence Calhoun and Opal Burns Calhoun of Grayson. In addition to his father, Jack was preceded in death by his infant son, Matthew.
He is survived by his wife, Levona Adkins Calhoun, a son Jack D. (Nikki) Calhoun of Grayson, a brother, Roger (Linda) Calhoun of Grayson.
Jack graduated from Hitchins High School in 1959 and received his Bachelors Degree from Morehead State University in 1963. He started teaching in 1964 at Hitchins also coaching the basketball and baseball teams until 1972 when East Carter High School was established. At that time he coached baseball, basketball, and football during the 1972 season, and continued coaching the East Carter Baseball Program until 1982. In addition to coaching Mr. Calhoun was a well respected History Teacher at East Carter. He was of the Baptist Faith and was a Lifetime Member of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
Funeral Services were conducted August 28, at East Carter High School Gymnasium by Jimmy Adkins and Tim Porter.
Burial followed in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the Direction of the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.

Wilbur Deck Wagoner
1934 – 2009
OLIVE HILL – Wilbur Deck Wagoner, 75, of Olive Hill, passed away August 26, at his residence.
Mr. Wagoner was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Elliott County, a son of the late Joseph and Sarah Seagraves Wagoner. Deck attended the Bald Point Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Esther McCinnis and three infant siblings.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Wilma Rayburn Wagoner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell "Butch" and Susie Wagoner, Tim and Lisa Wagoner; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Vernon Kilgore, Shirley and Kenny Pierce, Stephanie and Erik McCleese, all of Olive Hill, one brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Agnes Wagoner of Shiloh, Ohio; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jewell and Winford Brown of Zenia, Ohio, Von Feltner of Toledo, Ohio, and Loretta and Marvin Davis of Olive Hill, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.
Funeral services were held August 29, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother John Bradley and Brother John Jordan officiating.
Burial followed in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky.
Eric Kilgore, Timmy Kilgore, Austin Kilgore, Kenny Pierce, Erik McCleese and Vernon Kilgore served as pallbearers.

Jean S. McDowell
1951 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Jean S. McDowel, 59 of Morehead, went home to be with our Lord on August 24, at St Claire Medical Center in Morehead after a lengthy illness.
She was born January 5, 1951 in Carter Co., a daughter of the late James Fisher and Ruth Prichard Fisher Towler, and her step father the late Edsel Towler.
She was a devout Christian of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mike Towler and John Fisher.
Surviving are four children, Cathy (Willie) Conn, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, Raymond Douglas (Loretta) McDowell of Grayson, Loretta McDowell of Ashland and Mylissa McDowell Gatchell (Chris Scamardo) of Ashland; One brother, James (Sue) Fisher of Morehead; One sister, Patti Salyers of Ashland and Six grandchildren, Glori Sharren, Dovey Gallilea. Seria Lynn, Caleb Michel, Raymond Jr (DJ) and Harlan Thomas.
Funeral services were August 27, at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, with Larry McDavid, minister.
Burial was at the Adkins Cemetery on Everman’s Creek in Carter County.

Jean S. McDowell
1951 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Jean S. McDowel, 59 of Morehead, went home to be with our Lord on August 24, at St Claire Medical Center in Morehead after a lengthy illness.

Fred Thomas Malone
1974 – 2009
GRAYSON – Fred Thomas Malone, 36 of Grayson died August 28.
He was born July 18, 1974 in Ashland, Ky.
He formerly was an apprentice funeral director at Malone Funeral Home, a technician in the telecom industry, and a boilermaker. He was disabled as a result of diabetes and physical injuries.
Freddy was a Christian and attended the Bayless Memorial Presbyterian Church in Grayson. He had a talent for meeting people and had many friends. Fred’s two sons were the light of his life.
He is survived by his two sons Hunter and Gavin Malone of Grayson his Mother Linda O’Bryan (Pat) McDavid of Grayson; his father Mike (Rose Leadingham) Malone of Grayson; three sisters Stephanie (Chris) Huddle, Shawnie (Dale) Hensley and Lindsay Malone of Grayson; three brothers Landon McDavid, Lane Malone and Anthony (Karen) McDavid of Grayson.
Funeral services were Aug. 31, at the Malone Funeral Home.
Burial was in East Carter Co Mem. Gardens, with Ministers Harry Spickler and Tim Nischan.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations to the education fund for Hunter and Gavin at the Commercial Bank 208 E Main Street, Grayson, KY 41143.
Ella Nora Kouns
1935 - 2009
GRAYSON – Ella Nora Kouns 75, of Grayson, died August, 26, at Kings Daughters Medical Center.
She was born August 8, 1935 at Reedville Ky, daughter of the late Coy and Kathleen (Burton) Kouns.
Ella was a cook at Hitchins Elementary School for many years and a member of the Hitchins Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister Carolyn Kay (Kouns) Keyes.
Her survivors include; one son Perry (Donna) Kouns of Hitchins, one brother, Doug (Rosa) Kouns of Cocoa Florida, two sisters Phyllis (Woody) Flaugher and Susie Kouns both of Hitchins, two grandchildren Erik (Ashley) Kouns of Grayson, Adam Kouns of Lexington, one great-granddaughter Ella Kouns of Grayson, and a host of family and friends who mourn her passing.
Funeral services were conducted August, 30, at Sparks Funeral Home with Brother Steven Keyes Minister.

Lillian Baker Applegate 1923 – 2009
FRANKFORT – Lillian Baker Applegate, 87, of Frankfort, Ky, formerly of Grayson, died August 29, at her residence.
She was born March, 23, 1923, in Grayson, a daughter of the late Thomas Baker and Nora Ellen Wicker Baker.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grayson and a former Sales Clerk at Rupert’s Department Store in Grayson.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by six brothers,three Sisters, and one granddaughter, Carolynn.
She is survived by two sons, Michael (Anna Katheryn) Applegate of Grayson, Keith Douglas (Joy) Huffman of Milboro, Va; two daughters, Judith (Jim) Thornton and Sally Everman of Frankfort, Ky; three brothers, Jack Baker of Olive Hill, Harlan “Hal” Baker of New Albany, Miss., Tom Baker Jr. of Pine Bluff, AK; two sisters, Inez Routt and Betty Jonas both of Columbus, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Nancy, Kelly, Rebecca, Lisa, Lori, Bethany, Derek, Kent, Michael, and Jason; and ten Great-Grandchildren.
Services will be conducted 2:p.m. Sept. 1, at the Sparks Funeral Home by Lewis Davis, Minister.
Burial will follow in the Biggs Hill Cemetery.
