Drugs touch many lives - Week 5

August 22, 2007 — Editor’s Note: This is a series of first-hand accounts of lives touched by drugs here in Carter County. The names will be changed to protect identity.

Drugs have touched members of my family in one way or another for almost 20 years now.

My nephew started with casual drug use and it has been a never-ending story that has left him being a heroin addict.

This is a very horrific drug. It has taken him from his family. I thank God above it’s not put him in his grave as of yet. But he has been in and out of prison many times doing things he shouldn’t to feed his addiction.

My heart aches so very badly for him and I love and miss my nephew terribly. I have prayed for God to keep him safe and he has done that. I have never asked God to get him out of trouble only to keep him safe. I know being incarcerated may not be the best solution to his problems but it has kept him safe.

He has just been sentenced to a very long prison term and he seems to be handling it pretty good, better than me. So here come more Thanksgivings, more Christmas’ and more birthdays without him. But I’d rather him be locked up than six-feet under.

When the drugs talk to these addicts nothing or nobody else matters. It’s really sad to think of something having such a hold on your whole being.

How we need to unite as a community to stand strong to fight this war against drugs. We need to stop letting drugs take the people we love and care about away from us. Some have lost loved ones forever while others have lost them to prisons or hospitals. Regardless whether they are wealthy or poor, young or old, drugs are destroying our society.

I can sit and close my eyes and see my nephew’s good-looking face with his big smile. I see his big heart and know his kindness and his intelligence. My heart is broken to know he is going away for so long. But I also have a sigh of relief knowing he’s alive and he will come home again and I just hope and pray this time will be forever and that he will win his war against drugs.

I love you my nephew and my heart is forever true to you.
